Trou Hologram Phone: mobile without a physical screen
We have been reviewing and discussing mobile (phone) screens and interfaces for a while now. It started with an one color screen, followed by one color touchscreens. Nowadays we have (touch)screens with 16 million colors and they are all over the place and they have changed the way we consume media. The last change with a very big impact came two years ago when we were introduced to a new kind of touchscreen from the iPhone: bright, multitouch and so finger-friendly. So what will be the next step in screenland? Flexible screens, organic screens or screens that don’t need any energy at all? Well… what about not any screen at all?
no physical screen
The Trou Hologram Mobile Phone throws away the traditional concept of mobile phonedisplays and instead it utilizes 3D hologram projections to display images. Tiny projectors line the inner surface of the hollow and bring to life many aspects of this technology. Imagine seeing 3D maps of a particular area, your girlfriend’s hologram when she calls or the 3D pictures you took!
holographic calling
The idea of this kind of display comes from a submission for a designcompetition for the mobile phone of 2020. The Trou Hologram Mobile Phone, by Mac Funamizu, is just a design… but with the recent delvopments of Augmented Reality and holographic technology we can say that we can expect these kind of interfaces implemented in real devices within a few years.
It can bring multiple revolutions along with it. Think about social changes in how we communicate with each other and how we will use mobile applications based on this kind of interfaces. Navigating around city’s in 3D, playing games on mobile game consoles with markerless augmented reality of just (dis)approving a dress that your girlfriend just put on for you. Webbrowsing will get extremely interactive and the way search engines present their results will change dramatically into more visual and 3D.
But what will it do for marketeers? With a good implementation and use of the hologram display a marketeer could reach the user in it’s own environment showing a product or anything else without physically beeing there. The marketeer can set up an interactive chat with the user and even being personal through 3D holograms. It will be a very interesting and challenging evolution for marketeers and change the way they think about marketing. One simple example is below. Besides the fact the existing Mini cooper will not be around at 2020 you can imagine buying a car from your phone with this kinda technology.
P.S. The word Viewfinder will be as in the old days again.
