The real new functions of the iPhone 3GS

Everyone should know now that Apple has announced its new mobile phone, the iPhone 3Gs with new camera, compass, video recording, voice control and better performance. The S stands for Speed. These are all functions that are present in many other phones yet. So what are the real new functions of the iPhone 3GS?
Compass
The compass functionality is also present in the T-mobile G1, HTC Dream/ION, HTC Magic and Nokia E72 (not to mention some outdoor phones that got it for years). So nothing new here. Actually Apple presented it in a very odd way: looking for the real direction in navigating (the first meters as everybody might know), rotating the map in Google maps and using it as, surprise, a compass. However, the real new application of the compass is augmented reality. Think about application of augmented reality in applications like Street View, Layar and Wikitude (only available for Android handsets at the moment).
The one more thing here is that Apple has access to ‘Joe the Plumber’ so, brings augmented reality to the majority of people. Imagine what this will do for marketers, shops, realty company’s etcetera!
Voice control and mono audio
Apple has implemented voice control and voice over. In short, you can talk to your iPhone and your iPhone talks back. This is a great gimmick to hear what music is played or to call somebody.
The one more thing here, although, is for the visually impaired. This people can use the iPhone let them read what’s on the screen, so they can read email, make calls, read web pages etc. Apple also implemented better use of universal zoom and white on black to make the screen more visible to people with low vision. There is also an improvement for people with hearing loss. People can turn on the mono functionality with bundles both channels for both ear buds.
More speed
The new iPhone is faster than earlier models and make browsing of internet pages even easier than it already was. This makes mobile use of internet easier, so more people will make more use of it. Although, almost every new phone is faster than it’s [predecessor]
The one more thing here is for marketers. More mobile use of internet will [broaden] the mobile market for ads, Search engine advertising, mobile TV, mobile shopping and mobile use of applications.
Multiplayer
The new 3.0 OS for iPhones let you play games with someone else using Bluetooth. Again nothing new as it was available on phones earlier as you might have seen on your own phone. However, you couldn’t find someone else with the same phone could you?
The one more thing here is that apple has a huge user base of people that use the iPhone for games, thereby; it’s one of the most sold smartphones so you should be able to find another person carrying an iPhone who you can play with. Again this is also a big thing for marketers, especially for the ones of game companies as this lead to even more sold games in the appstore.
Micropayments
Applications are very important for selling/using the iPhone. The first iPhone didn’t start with an appstore, but nowadays, you can’t imagine the iPhone without thinking about the apps. The iPhone appstore was not the first appstore for mobile phones, but it was the first successful manufacturer bound appstore. It was also the first one where developers were able to earn money for their mobile apps in an easy way.
The one more thing here is for marketers/developers. With the 3.0 OS apps and their revenues will be taken a step further. Marketers/developers can ask people to do micropayments in apps or games. For example: you can buy extra levels in games, without the need for a credit card. This is a perfect revenue model as we have seen in the market of ringtones and other SMS-using actions.
Conclusion
As you can see the new iPhone 3G S opens up many new options, especially for marketers as it broaden the revenue streams for them and Apple.
And remember: the one more thing ($$$) is first and all for Apple as they’re the big winners of every game they play.
