Stick This Thing to Your Kid and You Won’t Lose Them [GPS]

The Insignia Little Buddy is a $100 child-tracking GPS system. You simply duct tape the Little Buddy to your kid, and you’ll never lose the little bugger again (involuntarily).
A web interface positions you various little ones on a map marked with your custom “safety zones.” But the most enticing feature, if we’re studying the GPS tracking page properly, is that you can assign your children with various barnyard animal iconography. That’ll teach little piggy the consequences of being late.
The Little Buddy will be on sale at Best Buy shortly, and we assume the service could come with some sort of monthly cost. [Best Buy via navigadget]

Apple’s iPhone Developer News feed has posted a note saying developers should enhance their App Store apps with Core Location… but not if they just want to use it to serve up location-based ads. Of course, this has set off yet another round of conspiracy theories and Apple accusations. Here’s what Apple had to say:

WHERE, a popular location-based app that helps users find cheap gas prices, movie showtimes, and more, has been recently updated. Now, rather than simply giving you relevant information, they have made it possible to add your own content. For instance, if you arrive at a gas station and find the price to be different than [...]

So after my last post, I wish to update Canadian Android’ers that the HTC Magic is experiencing the same GPS/911 problems currently affecting the HTC Dream. Rogers is letting customers know via text message that 911 emergency calls will not complete due to a bug when GPS is enabled. Rogers asks that all Magic owners [...]

We’re huge fans of the built-in Google Maps Navigation that comes with Android 1.6 and later. The free GPS service has come along and found itself replacing applications and services from bigger, more established players. Naturally, we tend to show a little bias around here being that we’re all Android lovey-dovey. How does the service [...]

Last night I received a text message from Rogers regarding an issue involving 911 calls. This screw up can only be described as HUGE! Rogers is informing all of their HTC Dream customers of an issue that does not allow 911 emergency calls to complete while the GPS receiver is enabled. Rogers asks that all [...]

The Tweetdeck dev team has been busy over the holidays, bringing us version 1.3 of the iPhone application. It consists mostly of minor improvements, but there’s one cool feature: geotagging and inline maps in the tweet detail screen.
Of course, to have your tweets tagged with your current location, you must enable geo-tagging in the settings; iPhone’s GPS will do the rest. The coolest new feature is definitely “View on map”, which lets you see all the geotagged tweets from a certain column on a Google Map, and zoom in on them to get more info.
Other features include being able to choose which style of retweet you prefer (i.e. the old one vs. the official one), and adding lists as columns.
For an overview of all the new features in Tweetdeck for iPhone v1.3, check out the video below.

Near Me Now: Google’s Mobile Homepage is Location Aware

Go to Google.com in your iPhone or Android browser and you’ll see a small new addition to the homepage: a tiny Near Me Now option below the search box. The new functionality turns your location into an automated search query and makes finding or learning about places in your immediate vicinity a no-brainer.
The U.S.-only functionality uses GPS on your device to pinpoint your whereabouts and sort nearby results — right on the Google.com mobile homepage — into the following functional categories: Explore right here, restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and ATMs and banks.
In fact, the “Explore right here option” serves up an instant drop-down menu, providing you with results that are literally right in front of you. You’ll immediately get a quick glance at a venue’s Place Page rating and its distance from you. As a result, the simple and smart addition to the mobile Google experience is bound to be both a big time saver and a boon for Place Pages.
It’s no mystery that Google is trying to attack mobile location-based services and customer review sites like Foursquare and Yelp head-on, and actively promote its Place Pages. This update is a natural progression to help it do just that. We do have to wonder, however, as to why the functionality isn’t a part of the Google Mobile app yet.
If you’re not clear about how Near Me Now works, you can watch this rather hokey video demonstration:
