This Clothespin-Looking USB Pendant Will Save Your Long-Distance Relationship [Concept]
OK, so they won’t really save any relationships, but the idea behind the Presence in Absence USB pendants is almost sweet. You keep digital scrapbooks on your pendants and then swap those instead of bodily fluids when you finally reunite.
When you get your Presence in Absence kit, the two pendants are actually one single birch wood-encased gadget. You and your dear one are supposed to use the included carving knife to separate the two flash drives and bond while cleaning up the wood shavings. This process and the future data sharing represents how the two of your are parts of a whole and belong together. You’ll share pictures, videos, music, the events in each other’s lives that you miss out on during times apart.
Quite sweet. Call me crazy though, but I think I’ll stick to less symbolic bonding experiences when reuniting with my long-distance lover. [Dezeen]

Grace Slick’s famous quote about the 60’s could be more narrowly applied to many gigs and festivals of this or any year.
I’ve been to quite a few (ever since my first one which was Kula Shaker at the Leicester De Montfort Hall, oh dear) and other than the really recent ones, I actually struggle to remember [...]

In an article over at jkontherun.com, it seems that some enterprising Android enthusiasts have found that some Android powered devices have the ability to support USB keyboards built into their stock firmware.
As the author of the article points out, it is not as simple as plugging in that extra keyboard you have laying around, indeed [...]

Hudson River water landings? Those are so yesterday, man. Somewhere in the Congo today there’s a pilot who, after a slight, um, miscalculation, crash landed his plane into a lava field.
Now, we can make light of this incident because all 117 passengers and crew walked away from the crash largely unharmed. The only real casualty was the captain’s ego, although I think he’s probably the talk of the terminal this morning. I mean come on—lava!
And check out this crazy quote from MSNBC:
The plane was flying from Kinshasa to Goma, and passengers had warned the crew that there were heavy clouds, Radio Okapi said.
Since when do the passengers do in-flight risk assessments for the crew? [MSNBC via Geekologie]

The True Google Phone May Be Coming Soon [Rumor]

TechCrunch is hearing some veeeeeery interesting talk about a true Google Phone: Not just an Android device, but a phone designed top-to-bottom by Google to fulfill their dream of exactly what Android can be. It’s a resilient rumor.
We’ve heard rumors like this before, but this time there are a few distinct elements that seem credible, maybe even enough to make us rethink our previous position. We’re basing this all on Michael Arrington’s sources—his article is a bit vague, but points to an outsider-made but Google-dictated device, sort of like how Microsoft’s first Zune was actually made by Toshiba—and in the case of the Google Phone, there are a couple options for the possible manufacturer. The obvious choice is HTC, who’s been the major hardware manufacturer of Android devices, but TechCrunch hears that the source of the hardware will be Korean, not Taiwanese, which likely points to either Samsung or LG.
Samsung has a long-standing relationship with Apple, supplying tons of parts for the iPhone, so maybe LG would step up to the plate and develop this phantom device. LG’s no stranger to Android, but has been a minor player up to this point—maybe they’ve been working on this mysterious Google Phone in the meantime, which is supposedly aiming for an early 2010 release.
Right now, we don’t know much of anything, so we’re reaching out to you guys—if you’ve heard anything about a possible Google Phone, please shoot us an email. [TechCrunch]
ATI Radeon HD 5970: The World’s Fastest Graphics Card [Graphics Cards]

The ATI Radeon HD 5970 slaughters the competition in pretty much every benchmark thrown at it. It’s outrageously fast. We’re talking five teraflops here, people. Teraflops.
MaximumPC put the 5970 to the test, and found that it lives up to its promise. The 2GB dual-GPU card is the first to support DirectX 11, and basically doubles its wholly respectable predecessor (the 5870) in specs, capable of delivering nearly 5 teraflops of raw processing power. It’s a massive card, about a foot long, designed mostly for heat dissipation, at which aim it apparently succeeds. It’s also got easy access to overclocking via AMD’s OverDrive, and can drive up to three displays simultaneously with a maximum resolution of 7680×1600. So it’s pretty much the greatest thing ever, and it’s got a pricetag to match: $600 upon its undisclosed release. Yow. [MaximumPC]
Quantum Physics Visualized [Art]

I wish that Julian Voss-Andreae had made some of these sculptures when I was in school. While we can’t really claim that they represent quantum physics concepts accurately, they still would’ve made reading about Bosons and Fermions more pleasant.
Julian left his quantum physics research path, but he certainly carried knowledge and inspiration from it over into his art career. These sculptures are intended to portray some incredible quantum physics ideas for which there are “no consistent mental images.” That craziness aside, the sculptures are lovely eye-candy based on artistic merit alone. AT&T’s 3G Network Sees 2,000% Increase Since iPhone 3G Release…Droid Camera Fixed, Without Explanation?…Genius Bar App Won’t Help if Your iPhone Is Broken…Samsung Beats out Vizio for Top LCD Seller…

AT&T’s 3G Network Sees 2,000% Increase Since iPhone 3G Release
In the wake of a big $65 million upgrade to its network here in the San Francisco Bay Area, AT&T revealed that the improvement was due to 3G usage being up 2,000% after the release of the iPhone 3G last year. That sounds like a crazy number for which the iPhone deserves all kinds of high fives, but it’s really not surprising—how many AT&T 3G phones were there before the iPhone 3G, even? And of course 3G use across the board is up in crazy numbers, since smartphones have really started taking off in the last year or so—so to be honest, the number doesn’t really mean all that much. Hence its ending up here in the sad pit of Remainders. [All Things D]

Droid Camera Fixed, Without Explanation?
The Motorola Droid camera is a serious problem. I can’t compete with Matt’s angry poetry on the subject, so here it is, clipped from his review:
The camera is complete garbage. It takes 10 years to start up, 2 to focus, and another 4 to actually take the goddamn picture. And there’s no distinct visual feedback to let you know a photo’s been snapped. And the photos suck. That pumpkin shot, in decent lighting, is as good as it gets. Like I said in the Android 2.0 review, I don’t know if it’s the hardware or the software, but it’s inexcusably bad.
Yow. But users have spontaneously been reporting that the camera, all of a sudden, has stopped sucking—what’s the deal? Apparently there was some kind of bug wherein a particular state of the clock (meaning, time of day) screws with the Droid’s autofocusing, which sounds insane to me, but what do I know? Apparently it should work okay now, and while it’s temporary, the incoming Dec. 11th bug fix should take care of things. [Electronista]

Genius Bar App Won’t Help if Your iPhone Is Broken
Rumor has it that Apple is planning to add a Genius Bar app to the App Store (appappappapp) that will let you make appointments, track your place in line, and curse the world when you realize you can’t use the app because your iPhone is broken, which is the whole reason you need to make the appointment in the first place. Catch 22 apps are the very best kind of apps. [TUAW]

Samsung Beats out Vizio for Top LCD Seller
I bet you’ve been waiting by your computer, eager to see who managed to eke out the top spot in the LCD sales wars this fiscal quarter. Will it be Vizio, the low-priced upstart who took the LCD world by storm? Or Samsung, the crafty veteran with the quality sets and sleek design? Looks like this quarter, Samsung took the prize—and it’s in Remainders because honestly who cares, at all. [CrunchGear]

Holiday season air travel just got a little less crappy—freebie access starts today, and runs through to January 15. Read on for the full list of airports, and info on free Wi-Fi promos from Yahoo and Microsoft, too.
You may also remember that Google already said it would foot the bill for Virgin America Wi-Fi during the same period.
The catch? Once you log into the network, you’ll be pestered if you want to set Google to your homepage or try Google Chrome. But that’s it. I can deal with that. You’ll also have the option to make a donation to Engineers Without Borders, the One Economy Corporation or the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.
Meanwhile, Yahoo is providing free Wi-Fi for an entire year in Times Square, and Microsoft and JiWire will give free Wi-Fi at airports and hotels if you make one search on Bing. I like free stuff! [Google]
