Sony Ericsson CEO Gunning for #1 Android Phone Supplier in World

Bloomberg is reporting a short blurb today about Sony Ericsson and their lofty aspirations. According to Chief Executive Officer Bert Nordberg, SE has their sights set on becoming the number one Android phone supplier in the world. Currently, they sit at second with a 17 percent share, whereas the top seat occupies 23 percent. There was no timeline given as to when they plan to accomplish their goal, but we welcome the competition. Any guess as to who number one might be? said at a briefing in Beijing today, without identifying the rival. Nordberg didn’t give a timeframe for achieving the top spot.

Motorola Announces “Defy” for European Market

Motorola has added to their Android portfolio today as they unveiled their new, ruggedized Defy handset for European carriers. While it may look like an average touch-only phone, it has what it takes where it counts. Taking its queue from the i1 released earlier this year, the Defy is considered a rugged handset. Essentially, this means the phone can withstand all types of abuse, including water, drops, dust, and scratches.

The hardware is pretty solid on the inside with an 800 MHz OMAP 3610 processor, 1.25GB onboard memory, and 5-megapixel camera. The 3.7-inch screen is protected with Gorilla Glass and has an 480×854 resolution. The Defy comes with Android 2.1 and MOTOBLUR 1.5, with Froyo listed as “being investigated”. Look for this guy later in the fourth quarter of the year (Q4 2010).

Rockbox for Android in Progress

Think back. You had an mp3 player with an annoying user interface, everything was locked down and you couldn’t manage your music the way you wanted. And then you found out about Rockbox, the open source firmware for mp3 players. You hacked it on to yours and had a whole new music player that maybe wasn’t as pretty, but sure was under your control.  Flash forward: Rockbox is still around–a surprise to me–and, even more surprising, a version for Android is in the works.

Unlike other versions of Rockbox, which replace a device’s firmware entirely, the version for Android is a standalone music player app. Though far from finished, you can download working builds of the app so far directly from the site. Once you figure out that different (completely unmarked) regions of the screen have different functions (top/bottom to scroll up/down, the center selects the option you’re on, etc.), you’ll be able to give it a little whirl.

Certainly unfinished, and certainly not for everybody, but if you’re like me, worth a try just for the nostalgia.

Introducing the Android Phone Power Rankings! (Cast YOUR Vote)

Today we’re introducing a new feature to AndroidGuys called the Android Phone Power Rankings.  The idea behind it is simple.  We all have our own opinions as to how great we think various Android handsets are, but what do we think as a collective unit? I conducted a blind rating poll for each phone offered by the carriers in the United States.  This includes current models, but also retired and unique phones like the Nexus One and G1.  In future polls, we’ll be including phones from around the world.Keeping certain things in mind, each device was given a “Power” number between one and ten.  What factored into the rating?

  • Handset Age
  • Carrier
  • Hardware
  • Current version of Android
  • Expected future platform support

We were curious to see how things would stack up.  Would it be newest phones at the top?  Would a certain carrier own the high spots? Would one handset maker score more favorably than others?  Well, without further ado, here’s the first Android Phone Power Rankings – The top 25 handsets as picked by your AndroidGuys staff.  Where does your phone stack up?

  1. Samsung Epic 4G (Sprint)
  2. HTC EVO 4G (Sprint)
  3. HTC Nexus One (T-Mobile)
  4. Samsung Vibrant (T-Mobile)
  5. Motorola Droid X (Verizon)
  6. Motorola Droid 2 (Verizon)
  7. HTC Droid Incredible (Verizon)
  8. Motorola Droid (Verizon)
  9. Samsung Captivate (AT&T)
  10. HTC myTouch 3G Slide (T-Mobile)
  11. HTC myTouch 3G (T-Mobile)
  12. Motorola i1 (Sprint)
  13. Samsung Intercept (Sprint)
  14. Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 (AT&T)
  15. HTC Aria (AT&T)
  16. HTC G1 (T-Mobile)
  17. HTC Her0 (Sprint)
  18. Samsung Acclaim (U.S. Cellular)
  19. LG Ally (Verizon)
  20. Samsung Moment (Sprint)
  21. Motorola Charm (T-Mobile)
  22. Motorola CLIQ XT (T-Mobile)
  23. Motorola Devour (Verizon)
  24. Motorola CLIQ (T-Mobile)
  25. Motorola Backflip (AT&T)

Not listed: Samsung Behold II (T-Mobile), Garminfone (T-Mobile)

Did we nail it or not?  We’d love to see what you think.  Please leave a comment below with your opinions.  When you’re done,  vote in the FAN POLL too!  We’ll be listing your voices as well.  NOTE: Fan votes will be collected and tallied through Sunday, September 5th.

Oh, and we’ll be doing this every month!

New Google Voice Ripped from G2 ROM

Remember that new version of the Google Voice app we told you about last week, the one that’s part of the leaked G2 ROM and includes a revamped widget? Well, you don’t have to wait for the G2 to get it. The guys over at XDA-Developers have pulled it the leaked ROM so you can install it like any other app.

As some of you may remember, when the latest Google Voice update came out it improved the speed of placing calls, but in the process eliminated the possibility of taking advantage of unlimited calling via MyFaves or a Friends and Family feature.  This new app also has that “fix,” so if you’re still running an older version of Google Voice, you may not want to upgrade. Also, since it’s a pre-release version of the new version, it may have some issues, but knowing that, feel free to give this a shot.
