Nearly Two Thirds of Android Users on 2.1 or Above
Aug 5th
The now familiar Platform Version Chart has been updated at the Android Developers site, and for the period ending August 2, it shows nearly 2/3 of users on 2.1 or 2.2. Android 2.1 accounts for 59.7%, and 2.2 for 4.5%. Together, that’s 64.2%.
With the rash of Froyo updates going out now, the 2.2 slice is likely to get a lot bigger soon, but it will mostly be eating away at 2.1′s share in the near term. We’ll also likely see the steady decline of 1.5 and 1.6 continue.

Motorola Cliq Gets Android 2.1, Sorta
Jul 23rd
The Motorola Cliq has gotten some Android 2.1 love sooner than we thought. According to an anonymous tipster, there’s a leaked ROM floating around out there that appears to be an official T-Mobile 2.1 ROM. No, they’re not releasing 2.1 OTA just yet, but an August time-line seems to likely. This looks to be a leaked testing version.
EngadgetMobile got their hands on this ROM and got it running on their Cliq. They’re impressed with it, claiming the speed and smoothness look promising. Still no official word on an official 2.1 release, but we’ll keep you posted. Check out the pics below!

Android 2.1 Hits Cellular South’s HTC Hero
Jul 22nd
Cellular South, one of the first mobile carriers in the US to carry Android phones is giving the classic HTC Hero the 2.1 update. Their website is showing instructions on how to download the update, and lists all of the features included. The site is pretty detailed so you shouldn’t have a problem.
If you happen to live in Mississippi, USA, and have the opportunity to use Cellular South, check out their unlimited plan. Here’s what the website says about it:
Coupled with Cellular South’s Smartphone Unlimited Plan, the best value for smartphones and the only one of its kind in the wireless industry, the enhanced user experience with the HTC Hero is now more accessible to individuals, families and businesses than ever before. For only $59.98 a month per line for two lines, customers can talk, text, access the mobile web and e-mail without worrying about counting minutes, megabytes or surprise bills.
Not too shabby, eh? Yup. So, Hero owners, how do you like 2.1?

2D graphics slow down after 2.1 Droid update?
Apr 2nd
Well this isn’t good. After being endlessly toyed with regarding the release window for the Android 2.1 update, Droid owners are now finding that the OTA has significantly slowed 2D graphic performance, as evidenced by the video below. Pinch-to-zoom in various apps, Live Wallpapers, and other long awaited goodies are now happily rocking Droids around America and I’m wondering: is the new sluggishness really that noticeable in daily use? Would you gladly return those delicious new features for the higher frame rate? Are you sorry that the update finally dropped? Well, I’m sure the issue will be addressed, if not sooner, then…well, you know.

Noah’s HTC Legend unboxing
Mar 31st
In terms of looks alone, I think this might be my favorite from HTC’s new generation of Androids. The specs of Hero’s successor don’t quite match up to…say, the N1 or EVO, but it does run 2.1 and that unibody aluminum casing looks mighty solid to me. And while I haven’t held one in my hand just yet, I really, really want to. I might not get the chance for some time if the setup in this video is any indication, but I’ll do what I can. I’m really curious about the optical trackpad.

Android 2.1 update for Motorola Milestone available in Hong Kong
Mar 23rd
Motorola has started to roll-out the Android 2.1 update for the Milestone. They have posted this shot on their Facebook page with the following message:
So the Hong Kong version is available, but as ever we would recommend you waiting your specific country/operator version update of Milestone for best results. Whilst we cannot provide the specific dates of each of these, hopefully this initial release demonstrates that Milestone 2.1 upgrade is a reality and the updates are starting to roll….please be patient, we think the update will be enjoyed by many….
That’s a great news for Milestone’s users who have been waiting for an update to come for months. Very soon, they all will be able to enjoy all the good things 2.1 has to offer.

Finally…FINALLY, the Droid update is upon us
Mar 17th
We’ve heard this several times now, if not a dozen, but it appears that the 2.1 update for Droid will finally, actually, begin to roll out Thursday. I’m not going to bother linking to all the false reports we’ve seen recently. No one needs to relive the nightmare.
Android Central has a snap of an internal system that indicates the date, and we have an official pdf from VZW that tells us what changes are included in the mandatory system update. Yes, it’s mandatory, and I can’t imagine anyone arguing against installation. You can get the full details on the update as well instructions on the procedure over at Verizon’s Droid support page. I’ve pasted a snippet from the pdf below. Yes, Live Wallpapers are in there. In part, the document reads…
