ExZeus Arcade brings killer gaming to the Android touchscreen

onlineI love owning a phone with so few hardware buttons. In terms of daily use, my N1’s power button, volume rocker, clickable trackball (plus four touch sensitive back, menu, home, and search keys), are more than enough for me to get by. I could probably eliminate one or two of those and function without hassle. However, I don’t don’t play complex games on a regular basis – mostly because I rarely have the time to kill but also because, in those rare moments I do end up gaming, I’ve transitioned from 2D fighters and racing games to the simplest, easiest to play, tap-here-tap-there kind of games. This transition began when I purchased my Nexus One. Some of you may recall my third video from the Nexus Questions and Requests series, where I tested out some console emulators. Gameplay was possible, but not all that much fun. Multi-touch wasn’t effectively employed, and It’s difficult to be enveloped by a virtual world when you’re struggling to engage the most basic control system in this one….

I’m glad to say that developers are attacking this weakness in the Android Market with a vengeance, and that an all-touch game can be just as immersive as one requiring dedicated buttons…perhaps more so. Today I purchased the HyperDevbox game ExZeus for ¥350 (between $3.50 and $4.00 USD) and I am loving it. The 3G graphics are great and the accelerometer-based navigation is responsive and intuitive. Tap where I want to target, and stuff blows up. The sound is rich, the colors stunning, and I feel like I’m playing a modernized N64. Of course, this environment doesn’t come without a hefty download, and after installing the app, you’ll be prompted to dl an additional 57 MB of data. The use of your storage space is well worth the fun though, and this game is already in my top 5 for Android – if only for the graphics and sound. This one is only fir the newer Android: Droid, Nexus, Milestone. Check out a video from the developer:

5 Eye-Popping 3D YouTube Videos

href=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/09/youtube-video-3d/&service=bit.ly”> width=”51″ height=”61″ src=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/09/youtube-video-3d/” align=”right”/>

src=”http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/3d-glasses.jpg” alt=”3d glasses image” class=”alignright size-full wp-image-143936″/>3D is set to be the href=”http://mashable.com/2009/12/29/first-us-3dtv-channel/”>next big thing in home cinema this year, as the multitude of href=”http://mashable.com/2010/01/05/3dtv-discovery/”>three-dimensional television launches at CES have shown.

While many of you may have caught a high profile 3D flick in cinemas over the last year with Up, Monsters vs Aliens, and of course, href=”http://mashable.com/2010/01/08/avatar-social-media-web/”>Avatar, it’s another thing to get ready to view 3D content on the small screen.

To help ease you into the prospect of things jumping out at you in your own living room, we’ve picked five great YouTube videos that demo 3D well.

So, grab your glasses, href=”http://stereo.gsfc.nasa.gov/classroom/glasses.shtml” >make your own, or if you want to watch sans comic eyewear, then chose YouTube’s cross-eyed option from the drop-down menu on its href=”http://mashable.com/2009/07/22/youtube-3d/” >recently organized 3D offerings.

You’ll need to watch the videos below on YouTube directly for the full 3D experience (double click on any video below to view it on YouTube.com), but you can begin your journey here.

href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GcLW0g_c1s” >1. 3D Waltz of the Flowers />

width=”480″ height=”385″> name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/0GcLW0g_c1s&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0″> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”> name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”> wmode=”opaque” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/0GcLW0g_c1s&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”480″ height=”385″>

We’re easing you in to the 3D experience gently. This is a great clip to start with as it’s so very genteel. Enjoy this footage of hot house flowers set to Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite. Take a moment to adjust those glasses or cross your eyes in the most civilized way.

href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4Lzhg7yaZU” >2. 3DigitalVision Demo Reel />

width=”560″ height=”340″> name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/V4Lzhg7yaZU&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0″> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”> name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”> wmode=”opaque” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/V4Lzhg7yaZU&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”560″ height=”340″>

Next up is a demo reel of various locations and activities, offered up in three dimensions that will gradually introduce you to more 3D action. Continue here so as not to induce any sudden nausea.

href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDBJS7eV0ag” >3. 3D Wide Angle Night Drive />

width=”560″ height=”340″> name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/IDBJS7eV0ag&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0″> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”> name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”> wmode=”opaque” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/IDBJS7eV0ag&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”560″ height=”340″>

Easy-peasy so far, yes? Well, how about some driving footage to get your brain ticking and your stomach ready for bigger and better things? This user-generated video gives you an idea of what real life looks like shot in 3D. The wide-angle aspect and HD quality make it an immersive experience.

href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQIAYHpin9I” >4. Roller Coaster Simulation />

width=”560″ height=”340″> name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/fQIAYHpin9I&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0″> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”> name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”> wmode=”opaque” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/fQIAYHpin9I&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”560″ height=”340″>

Now, always an IMAX classic, and for good reason, we have some old school roller coaster footage. Strap those cardboard glasses on and press play. If you can stand up while watching, it’s even better, as you may find yourself swaying with the motion. We dare your stomach not to lurch during this 3D clip.

href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i92HbFBdGFc” >5. Jaws 3D />

width=”560″ height=”340″> name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/i92HbFBdGFc&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0″> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”> name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”> wmode=”opaque” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/i92HbFBdGFc&hl=en_US&fs=1&rel=0″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”560″ height=”340″>

Duh-dun, duh-dun… Jaws 3-D was made during a revival of interest in 3D in the 80s. As we’re due such a revival now, and because the horror genre is particularly suited to the 3D format, it seems an appropriate clip to end with. If you’re of a nervous disposition, then look away just before the end. Nah, not really, it’s pretty tame, but hopefully it’s enough to whet your appetite for the 3D-fest to come in 2010.

3D TV: Comcast CEO Talks Pricing [VIDEO]

Roberts discussed href=”http://mashable.com/2009/12/01/comcast-nbc-deal/”>Comcast’s acquisition of NBC-Universal, but showed real exictement about href=”http://mashable.com/2009/12/29/first-us-3dtv-channel/”>3D TV. /> id=”more-180727″>

Major manufacturers are bringing out 3D television sets this year and already DirecTV, href=”http://mashable.com/2010/01/05/3dtv-discovery/”>ESPN and Discovery have announced plans to launch 3D cable networks.

You can watch the clip here. The discussion about 3D TV takes place in the first two minutes:

/> id=”cnbcplayer” height=”380″ width=”400″ classid=”clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000″ codebase=”http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,0,0″ > name=”wmode” value=”opaque”> name=”bgcolor” value=”#000000″/> name=”salign” value=”lt”/> name=”movie” value=”http://plus.cnbc.com/rssvideosearch/action/player/id/1380497496/code/cnbcplayershare”/> name=”cnbcplayer” PLUGINSPAGE=”http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer” allowfullscreen=”true” allowscriptaccess=”always” bgcolor=”#000000″ height=”380″ width=”400″ quality=”best” wmode=”opaque” scale=”noscale” salign=”lt” src=”http://plus.cnbc.com/rssvideosearch/action/player/id/1380497496/code/cnbcplayershare” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” /> />

Some analysts predict that more than href=”http://mashable.com/2009/12/10/3d-televisions-2014/”>40 million 3D TVs will be sold by 2014. The rationale for that sort of growth? As Roberts says in the video, the pricing for 3D TVs is going to be nominal in comparison with current LCD HDTVs.

For instance, Vizio is launching its href=”http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/05/vizios-2010-xvt-lcds-go-up-to-72-inches-with-3d-led-wifi-and-wi/” >3D TV lineup in August, and a 47″ LED backlit 3D model will have a MSRP of $1,999.99 U.S. Vizio’s non-3D LED backlit HDTV sets href=”http://www.vizio.com/news/VIZIOLaunchesArsenalofLEDBacklitLCDHDTVsin2010http://www.vizio.com/news/VIZIOLaunchesArsenalofLEDBacklitLCDHDTVsin2010″ >are priced at $1,799.

I predict that 3D will essentially become a standard feature in the higher-end TV market, which lowers some of the barriers to adoption. Plenty of households are just now switching to HDTV or are looking to upgrade their sets. If given the option to get HDTV or pay a little bit more (or even about the same as a high-end set) to get 3D capabilities as well, that 40 million mark might actually be conservative.

What do you think about 3D TV? What does it need to offer for you to consider making your next TV 3D?

How Social Media and the Web Helped Avatar Make $1 Billion

href=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/08/avatar-social-media-web/&service=bit.ly”> width=”51″ height=”61″ src=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/08/avatar-social-media-web/” align=”right”/>

href=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/avatar160.jpg”> src=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/avatar160.jpg” alt=”" title=”avatar160″ width=”219″ height=”160″ class=”alignright size-full wp-image-178883″ />The Simulcam and Fusion 3D camera inventions were not the only technologies that made James Cameron’s Sci-Fi epic Avatar a massive box office success. While smaller films have used social media to spread the word guerrilla-style, no other major blockbuster has employed a full-on social web marketing assault quite like Avatar.

The results in its case were a href=”http://mashable.com/2009/12/21/avatar-earnings/”>$232 million opening weekend, a total of href=”http://mashable.com/2010/01/04/avatar-billion/”>one billion dollars in revenue by year’s end, and the rank of href=”http://perezhilton.com/2010-01-07-avatar-becomes-the-2-all-time-grossing-movie” >#2 highest grossing film of all time. Cameron’s $500 million act of hubris has paid off. Here’s an outline of the social media moves Avatar’s team made to achieve success.

/>

The Basics: Facebook, Twitter, MySpace

/>

href=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/avatarfbfans.jpg”> src=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/avatarfbfans.jpg” alt=”" title=”avatarfbfans” width=”133″ height=”160″ class=”alignleft size-full wp-image-180027″ />Avatar has its own href=”http://mashable.com/category/facebook”>Facebook, href=”http://mashable.com/tag/myspace”>MySpace, and href=”http://mashable.com/category/twitter”>Twitter pages. That’s getting to be standard these days. The 18,000-follower href=”http://twitter.com/officialAVATAR”>Twitter account has tellingly not been updated since a few days after the film’s theatrical release; once the word was out, the job was done. While it was active, though, its followers would retweet updates to their followers, who (if interested) would do the same, spreading the word all over the web. The href=”http://www.facebook.com/officialavatarmovie?v=wall&ref=search” >Facebook Page is even more impressive, with over 700,000 fans.

Facebook’s updated Page features make it href=”http://mashable.com/2009/03/19/new-facebook-brands/”>the place to be for brands seeking exposure. The site allows brands to push updates to fans. Those fans see the updates in their personal news feeds, and they can then share them with others, just like on Twitter. Avatar’s Facebook Page is also where the MTV-hosted live webcast was hosted — more on that later.

/>

Reinventing the Movie Trailer Online

/>

href=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/avatarinteractive.jpg”> src=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/avatarinteractive.jpg” alt=”" title=”avatarinteractive” width=”640″ height=”409″ class=”aligncenter size-full wp-image-180025″ /> /> Granted, Avatar wasn’t the first film to take its trailer in a new direction for the web. It actually wasn’t first at any of these things, but an expansive strategy combining many of the best existing ideas was what made the film’s social media campaign a success.

It started out with something a lot of movies do now: an href=”http://mashable.com/2009/08/20/avatar-trailer/”>Apple trailer debut, announced on Twitter. Anticipation was high enough that the servers struggled to get the video out to everyone who wanted it. A href=”http://mashable.com/2009/10/29/new-avatar-trailer/”>second trailer rolled out a month later. The web trailers gained additional buzz when fans remixed them and href=”http://mashable.com/2009/12/09/avatar-mashup/”>mashed them up with other movies, something that the folks behind the Avatar marketing machine smartly didn’t interfere with.

It was yet another trailer that impressed us the most, though. An href=”http://mashable.com/2009/11/24/avatar-interactive-trailer/”>interactive trailer was presented as an href=”http://mashable.com/tag/adobe-air”>Adobe Air application. It required a download, but it was worth it for Avatar fans. They could see featured content and they could read the latest social media updates about the movie from within the trailer. The stunt got press coverage and word-of-mouth buzz.

/>

The Facebook and MTV Webcast

/>

href=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/avatarmtvfb.jpg”> src=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/avatarmtvfb.jpg” alt=”" title=”avatarmtvfb” width=”640″ height=”442″ class=”aligncenter size-full wp-image-180049″ /> /> On December 3, MTV.com put together an Facebook-hosted, LG-sponsored webcast called “Avatar Live.” Director James Cameron, producer Jon Landau, and stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana were interviewed by MTV News’ Josh Horowitz, but the questions were submitted by fans in the days leading up to the event.

The 30-minute interview might have been the most glamorous webcast to date; you just don’t see that many huge Hollywood names sit down to take questions from Internet fans all at once. Though community engagement from a director at that level is quite rare, we were reminded of Peter Jackson’s almost-daily video updates from the sets of The Lord of the Rings.

In both cases, people who didn’t know much about the films tuned in and were sold on them. Existing fans became more passionate about spreading the word and showing up on opening night.

/>

Broadcasting the Premiere Live On Ustream

/>

href=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/avatarustream.jpg”> src=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/avatarustream.jpg” alt=”" title=”avatarustream” width=”200″ height=”160″ class=”alignleft size-full wp-image-180065″ />The red carpet premiere of Avatar was href=”http://mashable.com/2009/12/14/avatar-red-carpet/”>broadcast live to web audiences on video streaming web site Ustream. Apart from the tech media coverage this got, we’re not sure how much this helped put bums in the seats, and the Twilight saga’s New Moon had already done the same thing, but it was neat. Any way you can expose audiences to your film certainly helps.

The broadcast’s sponsor was MySpace, so it reached an audience that might have been missed on Facebook. Fans could watch the video on the film’s MySpace page in addition to the Ustream website. The red carpet premiere came a week before the film hit theaters, so this was just one more way to generate buzz and get press in the final days leading up to the movie’s release. /> /> Do you have any insights about promoting films and other media on the web? 3D Gaming Comes to the Palm Pre

href=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/07/palm-pre-3d-games/&service=bit.ly”> width=”51″ height=”61″ src=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/07/palm-pre-3d-games/” align=”right”/>

In fact, there are now seven href=”http://mashable.com/tag/palm-pre/”>Palm Pre gaming apps available for download, including The Sims 3, Monopoly and Need for Speed Undercover from EA Mobile.

A select group of developers were given early access to the Palm webOS Plug-in Development Kit (PDK), which made immersive 3D gaming possible and resulted in the barrage of apps that launched today with the new functionality. Come March we could see a bevy of even more 3D apps, as Palm will make a beta version of the PDK available to all developers.

While we’ve yet to test out the 3D games for ourselves, we’re certainly excited by the cool factor of a 3D gaming experience.

style=”text-align: center;”> href=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/palm-pre-3d-app.jpg”> class=”aligncenter size-full wp-image-179987″ style=”margin: 10px;” title=”palm pre 3d app” src=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/palm-pre-3d-app.jpg” alt=”" width=”575″ height=”512″ />

Here’s the list of 3D games available now for Palm Pre (webOS 1.3.5):

- “Need for Speed(TM) Undercover” (EA Mobile) /> – The Sims(TM) 3 (EA Mobile) /> – MONOPOLY(TM) (EA Mobile) /> – Asphalt 5: Elite Racing (Gameloft) /> – Let’s Golf! (Gameloft) /> – Glyder 2 (Glu Mobile) /> – X-Plane (Laminar Research)

In the coming months, the Palm Pre also expects to add an Adobe Flash Player 10.1 plug-in to the App Catalog, which means that flash support is also right around the corner.
