More Evidence of a Sprint Nexus One?
Mar 13th
With the Nexus One headed to Verizon and Vodafone in the coming weeks, customers on other networks are starting to wonder if and when they’re provider will be offering the phone. One such carrier, Sprint could really use a new Android handset with high end specs like Nexus One.
One of our readers was recently in an online chat with a member of the Sprint team. Being that he will be ready to get a new handset soon, the subject of the phone came up.
Here’s the interesting part of the transcribed chat:
03/12/2010 11:40:46PM Rick Bradley: “Questions about upgrading my existing phone”
03/12/2010 11:41:17PM Agent (Brad M): “May I have your concern in detail?”
03/12/2010 11:42:58PM Rick Bradley: “Yeah. I’m due for to upgrade my phone to a new handset in the next couple of weeks. I definately want to get the best phone available. I have heard through the rumor mill that Sprint MIGHT be offering the nexus one with google possibly as soon as april”
. I’d really like to use this phone and I’d hate to have to go to verizon.. is there any chance you could confirm or deny this rumor of sprint carrying the nexus one ?
03/12/2010 11:44:08PM Agent (Brad M): “Sure. Let me check this.”
03/12/2010 11:45:16PM Rick Bradley: “thank you for checking”
03/12/2010 11:45:28PM Agent (Brad M): “You are welcome.”
03/12/2010 11:47:02PM Agent (Brad M): “I am sorry. We do not have any update on the launch of this phone right now.”
03/12/2010 11:47:59PM Agent (Brad M): “However, I have notated your account.”
03/12/2010 11:48:13PM Rick Bradley: “in what capacity ?”
03/12/2010 11:48:43PM Agent (Brad M): “Once we launch this phone, you will be notified with our promotional advertisement.”
03/12/2010 11:49:52PM Session Ended
While this is not proof of anything concrete, it certainly sounds like Sprint expects to offer the Nexus One in some capacity. Whether that’s directly through the carrier or more in a supportive role has yet to be figured out. Also, the echoes a conversation someone else had with the carrier just a few weeks back.
What do you guys think? Excited by the prospects of the super phone on the Now Network?

Opinion: What Does Verizon’s Nexus One Mean for Sprint?
Mar 4th
Neowin, with help from their inside informant, reported that Verizon will be getting the Nexus One on March 23rd. With the CDMA version of the phone spotted passing through the FCC, this date seems very likely. However, with all this excitement comes more questions.
When the Nexus One was announced by Google, T-Mobile-ers were ecstatic. On the flip side of the GSM spectrum, there was the AT&T crowd, who sulked and wept over the lack of support for their 3G bands. Keep in mind, this doesn’t stop AT&T users from using the phone on EDGE; there just isn’t a subsidy plan available to them. They have to buy the phone unlocked for a whopping $529.
With the CDMA version of the phone arriving, a slightly different scenario is beginning to take shape. You see, Sprint and Verizon use the same bands. This is the reason why Sprint users are able to roam onto Verizon’s network if they’re ever out of their service area. This means that a Verizon suited Nexus One is 100% compatible with the Sprint network and it’s 3G goodness. Sprint users are longing for the Nexus One. Currently, Sprint only has two Android options: the sexy and slow Hero, or the fast and bulky Moment. Why can’t Sprint users have a combination of both? The Nexus One is the ideal smartphone for any Android fan. It’s blazing fast, sexy as a pin-up, and gets updates right when Google releases them. It’s a dream phone. So why isn’t there any concrete news about Sprint carrying Nexus Uno? The customer service email saying that it’s coming could have just been a standard response for phone inquiries.
GSM and CDMA activation work very differently. With GSM, you can just pop your SIM card into any GSM capable phone. With CDMA, you have to register your ESN number with your carrier. In order for the CDMA version of the Nexus One to work with Lil’ Yellow, Sprint would have to add the ESN numbers to their database–something they won’t do unless they decide to support it. Sprint doesn’t allow unlocked phones onto its network. Without a Google/Sprint agreement, Sprint users who want the Nexus One would be forced to jump ship (unless the Supersonic and its months of waiting for OS updates are enough to keep you onboard).
It’s no secret that Sprint is struggling. The number three wireless carrier has been taking subscriber hits every quarter since merging with Nextel. If there’s any carrier that needs the Nexus One, it’s Sprint. This is what makes the situation so confusing. How could a company that’s in the process of rebuilding itself pass on carrying Google’s flagship device? A Nexus One running on Sprint’s unbelievable rate plans would be the deadliest combo in the market. Google wants to have its superphones available on all carriers, so surely, they’re in talks with Sprint. True, Sprint is very busy rolling out WiMAX and fixing their customer service, but how can they be too busy for Google? Answer: They can’t.
Right now, Sprint has no great high-end phone. For many of the users who have left Sprint, this is one of their biggest complaints. For a company like Sprint to make it big, they need the help of a giant. Google is the key to Sprint’s success. Sprint ignoring the Nexus One is like a physicist ignoring the laws of gravity. Sprint knows the value of Android and realizes its potential in the future mobility. They’ve read our posts, followed our coverage, and seen their customer service rep’s email. Yet, they never came out and said, “sorry, we have no plans to carry the Nexus One.” Silence is the key here. True, when there’s a rumor going around the Interwebs, a company doesn’t have to respond (and probably won’t). However, this only holds true when the rumor is started by an outside source. When a company, itself, leaks the information, it becomes their job to clarify. When Walmart accidentally put up a page saying that they’re selling the Nexus One, they had to come out and apologize for the error. Sprint’s own customer service said the device is coming. Had that been a mistake, Sprint would have had to issue a statement.
With a Sprint-ready Nexus One hitting the market this month, there’s just no way for them to ignore it. If Sprint didn’t end up carrying the Nexus One, I’d be shocked (I’d also probably leave Sprint after 5 years of yellow love). These Are the Droids claims that Sprint already has a Nexus One placeholder in their database. Also, just a few days ago, one of our readers, DLP, posted the following comment regarding our previous coverage of the matter.
“I had a problem with my Instinct last night and I was talking to CSR about phones while we were waiting for things to finish on the Instinct and I asked him about the Nexus One coming to Sprint and from what he told me it looks like the Nexus One will be coming to Sprint in April. We will see!!!”
For Sprint’s sake, I pray that the above intel is legit. It wouldn’t make sense for Sprint to pass on the Nexus One, especially if it means them being the only major carrier in the US without it. Even AT&T may get their own 3G capable version. If you’re a Sprint user and are on the wire about whether to stay or bounce–stay. The Nexus One is coming. I’m almost sure of it. The real question is… when?
UPDATE: I just saw this picture over at AndroidForums. It’s from less than a month ago and shows a live chat conversation on Sprint’s site that confirms the Nexus One. However, I’m not sure how authentic it is. It’s strange that it only merited a single response.

Fox News: AT&T Outbid Everyone on iPad, Verizon Still in Talks over iPhone, iPad
Feb 3rd
Fox News is reporting that AT&T outbid all other GSM providers in offering those reasonable $14.99 and $29.99 data plans for the iPad, and while Verizon and Apple are still discussing both the iPhone and iPad, there’s still nothing approaching an agreement in place.
What about all those rumors of Verizon getting the iPhone like, now?
the two companies are still “very much talking and plan to bring an iPhone and an iPad” to the CDMA network this year, following the expiration of AT&T’s exclusive agreement with Apple.
Still talking? These guys have been talking since 2006 before the launch of the first iPhone! Stop talking already and consummate the darn relationship — or walk away. When asked for comment about these on-going talks, Verizon spokesman Jeff Nelson said, “no comment,” so officially the company isn’t talking about the talks.
Bottom line then, it still could be later in the year, could be as far away as LTE next year or the year after.

Apple Announces Event, Verizon iPhone Rumors Follow
Jan 20th
Apple announces their Jan. 27 “Come see our latest creation” event, and like a big, rumor-filled moth to an increasingly rabid internet flame, rumors of a Verizon iPhone being part of it follow:
“We believe there is a good chance,” writes Canaccord Adams’ Peter Misek in a note to clients Wednesday, “that the ‘One more thing…’ part of next week’s presentation may include two iPhone-related announcements: namely, the release of iPhone OS 4.0 and the unveiling of iPhone 4G coming to Verizon in June.”
To be clear, TiPb still believes that, technologically, Apple will be able to produce a Verizon (i.e. CDMA) compatible iPhone by this June/July, but whether or not their exclusivity with AT&T will be over by then, and whether or not they can come to financial (subsidy) terms with Verizon is anyone’s guess.
Also, Misek no doubt means G4, as in 4th gen iPhone, not 4G as in 4G wireless, LTE networking, since he later states he only thinks we’ll see an LTE iPhone in 2011. And if iPhone 4.0 is “released” it will likely be a beta for developers, with the consumer “release” to follow a few months later as it has in years past.
So, anyone placing odds on a big, red iPhone next week?

Rumored Verizon iPhone to Contain Qualcomm EV-DO Chip
Jan 8th

According to TheStreet.com, Apple has struck a deal with San Diego based chip maker, Qualcomm, to supply the EV-DO chip for the rumored Verizon CDMA iPhone. Apple originally showed interest in a chip that would combine both wireless technologies, GSM and CDMA, to make it a world phone but then settled for CDMA when Qualcomm and other chip manufactures could not pull it off.
“Apple has chosen Qualcomm as its chip supplier [3G wireless technology chip for EV-DO] for the new version of the iPhone headed to Verizon this summer, according to Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar,” Moritz reports. “Kumar confirmed the decision with the manufacturers and suppliers involved with the phone.”
Of course at this particular moment in time Apple has no comment but it just adds more fuel to the fire for the long awaited Verizon iPhone. This is Qualcomm’s second big win this week as they are supplying the Snapdragon chip for the much hyped Google Nexus One.

Computerworld: iTablet Will Be on Verizon, iPhone… Maybe
Jan 6th
Computerworld is rumoring that Apple’s allegedly-to-be-announced-January-27th iTablet/iSlate will run on Verizon’s CDMA network according to… an analysts sources (!)
“The tablet will be supported by multiple [mobile] carriers,” said Brian Marshall of Broadpoint AmTech, citing unnamed sources he said were close to the situation. “Verizon and others,” he continued. “Definitely Verizon. I’ve been told that’s a certainty.”
Meanwhile, AppleInsider quotes another analyst who says, when it comes to the iPhone, Apple and Verizon can’t see eye-to-eye on pricing. Control-freaks the both of them, no one is yet blinking:
Currently, it is estimated that Apple gets a favorable $700 average selling price per iPhone, subsidized through exclusive carrier AT&T. Compare that with the ASP of the Motorola Droid, exclusive to Verizon, which costs an estimated $450 per sale.
Also, combined CDMA/GSM chips, which would let the iPhone run on both Verizon and GSM carriers like AT&T and most of the rest of the world, aren’t likely to be ready until the second half of 2010.
Hey, maybe Verizon will get a CDMA iTablet, but it can also be perpetually tethered to an AT&T/GSM iPhone! Sound off in the comments!

Motorola’s XT800 ‘Zeppelin’ Head to China
Dec 14th
Remember that camera-shy Motorola from a few weeks ago? Well, it’s back and this time it’s ready to face the camera. Not only that, we’ve got some fun details to share with you.
The XT800 ‘Zeppelin’ will be a World Class phone featuring both CDMA and GSM radios and will arrive on China Telecom’s network first. Yes, it’s a slab/touch only phone but it doesn’t come across as intimidating as the Droid. On the other hand, it says ‘business’ a little more than the Cliq does. In an interesting note, QQ.com (translated) refers to the XT800 as both Zeppelin and Titanium in their post.
Previous specs had pegged the handset with a 3.1-inch screen, but the pic above has us thinking it’s bigger.
- 3.1″ 320×480 (HVGA screen)
- HDMI output
- 5.0 MP camera w/ LED flash
- Bluetooth 2.1
- 3.5mm headphone jack
- GPS
- Memory card expansion
