Verizon Shows Us How Skype Mobile Works [VIDEO]

Verizon recently announced that they’ve worked out an exclusive deal to offer Skype Mobile on their Android handsets.  Starting this month, the Droid, Droid Eris, and Devour handsets will come loaded with the “new” feature that allows for calls anywhere in the world without using minutes.  Since neither Skype nor Skype Mobile are technically new, we’d understand if you already know how the respective services work.  However, there’s a large segment of the population who have yet to learn of Voice over IP (VoIP).

Verizon has taken to a cute little YouTube video to show us how their exclusive agreement stands to benefit current and potential Android users on the nation’s largest network.  Never one to resist taking a dig at the iPhone, Verizon reminds us that “these phones can run more than one app at a time”.

Best Buy to Offer Motorola Devour for $150

A leaked photo of one of Best Buys price sheets indicates the retail provider’s asking price for the Motorola Devour.  Thanks to a craft ninja armed with a blurrycam, we can see that Best Buy plans to charge $149.99 for the next Android handset for Verizon.  Of course, you have to sign a 2 year agreement to get it for that price.

Considering the specs, what do you guys think?  On the mark or should it be lower?

Verizon and Skype made their joint announcement this afternoon in Barcelona and it stands to benefit millions of subscribers, including those with Android handsets. Starting in March, Droid, Devour and Droid Eris handsets will be loaded with a special version of Skype Mobile designed for Verizon customers.  This software will give these users plenty of freedom as it pertains to making and receiving calls from around the world.

  • Call international phone numbers at competitive Skype Out calling rates;
  • Send and receive instant messages to other Skype users; and
  • Remain always connected with the ability to see friends’ online presence.

Those of you who are interested in picking up the Motorola Devour will be able to head to your local Best Buy and preorder one later this month.  Starting today, Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile stores are hosting pre-sales for customers anxious to get their hands on the “Megan Fox” phone.

The process sounds simple enough – Schedule a pick-up time after February 25 and reserve your handset by purchasing a $50 Best Buy Gift Card.  Much like the other phones offered by the retail giant, they will take care of any rebates and associated hassles by discounting the handset up front.

Soft Rollout for Motorola Devour Later This Month, Everywhere in March

The latest Motorola handset, the Devour, has been tipped to roll out with Verizon’s indirect channels on February 25th.  Who are ‘indirect’ channels?  Those are the guys barking at you like carnival workers when you walk past them in the mall. Motorola Devour Details

devour spec list

As the time flies by, the details on the Motorola Devour just keep rolling in. Just a couple days ago we got a glimpse of some promotional materials Verizon would get, and now we get an almost complete spec list. While the RAM/ROM are still rumored at 256/512MB, we now know for sure that it will be running on a Qualcomm MSM7627. The new processor features one 600mhz main app core, one 400mhz modem core, and and a 200mhz dedicated graphics GPU. The rest of the spec list is after the jump:

Android 1.6.
3.1-inch touchscreen at 320×480.
Dimensions: 4.55×2.4×0.61 inches.
Weight: 6.35 ounces
Talk time: Up to 340 minutes
Standby time: Up to 440 hours
Horizontal slider keyboard.
3-megapixel camera.
EVDO Rev. A.
WiFi b/g
aGPS
Audio formats: AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WMA, MP3
Video formats: MPEG-4, h.263,
Bluetooth with A2DP
HTML 5-compatible Webkit browser.
MicroSD card up to 16GB.
Speakerphone.
VCAST music with Rhapsody.

For the most part the Devour looks pretty identical to the Cliq except for the processor… oh yeah, and that and it will be shipping with MotoBlur on Android 1.6 and an 8GB SD card. The release date has yet to be set in stone, but it’s pretty safe to say it won’t be long now.
