HTC responds to Apple over antennagate

HTC’s Eric Lin has responded in statistical fashion to Apple’s iPhone 4 press conference where Steve Jobs showed off a Droid Eris losing singnal when death-gripped:

“Approximately .016% of customers [have complained]. We have had very few complaints about signal or antenna problems on the Eris”.

Which could also just mean there hasn’t been the attention or scrutiny placed on signal strength attenuation in the past, and again it will be open season now with any number of YouTube videos popping up showing everything from the HTC Droid Eris to HTC Droid Incredible to HTC Nexus One succumbing to the death-grip, just like Apple demonstrated.

However, HTC does have the forethought to warn customers not to touch the spot over their antenna (see image, top).

Verizon Shows Us How Skype Mobile Works [VIDEO]

Verizon recently announced that they’ve worked out an exclusive deal to offer Skype Mobile on their Android handsets.  Starting this month, the Droid, Droid Eris, and Devour handsets will come loaded with the “new” feature that allows for calls anywhere in the world without using minutes.  Since neither Skype nor Skype Mobile are technically new, we’d understand if you already know how the respective services work.  However, there’s a large segment of the population who have yet to learn of Voice over IP (VoIP).

Verizon has taken to a cute little YouTube video to show us how their exclusive agreement stands to benefit current and potential Android users on the nation’s largest network.  Never one to resist taking a dig at the iPhone, Verizon reminds us that “these phones can run more than one app at a time”.

Half-Baked Android 2.1 Leaks Out to Select Droid Eris Handsets

File under: Good News/Bad News

We’re hearing from a number of places that some Droid Eris owners are getting an OTA update.  The good news is that this is the Android 2.1 update they’ve been waiting for.  The bad news is that it appears to be nowhere near complete.  According to reports, Sense UI disappears, users cannot log into their Google accounts, and apps and data is being wiped. Verizon tells Engadget that “the Eris update to a ‘newer’ Android is still in testing and hasn’t yet been officially released.” Sounds like something slipped through the cracks and has affected a few folks.

For now, Droid Eris owners are advised to back up anything vital to the memory card or put it in the cloud.  Also, be cautious of any updates over the next few days.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in to us.

Verizon and Skype made their joint announcement this afternoon in Barcelona and it stands to benefit millions of subscribers, including those with Android handsets. HTC to Update Hero (EU) to 2.1 Update in March

We previously reported that the European HTC Hero could see an update from Android 1.5 to Android 2.1 at some point in February.  At the time, we were told secondhand that HTC Poland was pushing out the update.  We’ve learned today that Irish wireless provider, Meteor, has been in contact with HTC and is advising a March rollout.

Just got another update on this and HTC have said they are releasing 2.1 on the Hero and we are hoping to have this availible (sic) by the end of March…This will be available via the HTC website and we are also looking at other ways to make this update easier to access for our customers. – Meteor Forum

We’re still waiting to hear when Sprint plans to update their Hero or what Verizon is doing with the Droid Eris.  Last we heard, an update to 2.0 was slated for this quarter.
