Android 3.0 Test Build Unofficially Breaks Cover?
Jul 27th
Interestingly, our friends over at Phandroid have received a picture of a Nexus One supposedly displaying a version of Android 3.0(Gingerbread?). While I am extremely excited about the possibility of this, I am also very skeptical about a test version of Android 3.0 in the wild this early. Also, we have to remember that it is extremely easy to fake the firmware version using a little Photoshop. If this is real, why are they covering the top portion of the Nexus One? Does this even look like a Nexus One to any of you? It does a little bit to me.
So, what do you think? Is this real? Is it already possibly in the wild? Haha, will we get a leak (maybe overly optimistic)?

Froyo and Gingerbread Aim to End Android Platform Fragmentation
Mar 29th
Engadget is reporting today that the Google is looking to tackle the growing problem of Android fragmentation head on with the next two installments of Android: Froyo and Gingerbread. You know, the kind of fragmentation that has users running four different versions of the Android OS on their smart-phones (1.5, 1.6, 2.0, and 2.1). Put simply, Google’s been iterating the core far faster than most of its partners have been able to keep up.
According to the Engadget Team, many of Android’s standard applications and components from the platform’s core will be made downloadable and updatable through the Market, much the same as Google Maps now is. This process will take place over two major Android versions, starting with Froyo and continuing through Gingerbread. This way, just because Google rolls out an awesome new browser doesn’t mean you need to wait for HTC, Samsung, or whomever made your phone to roll it into a firmware update, and for your carrier to approve it. If all of this happens, you will be able to download most things from the market! Sounds like a damn good idea to me!
Let us hope this comes true !

Android News Mix: Gingerbread Edition
Feb 10th
Feeling low on your Android news diet? We’ve got the answer. Three cookie-sized (get it?) pieces of news small enough we can fit them in a single article, but big enough we can’t let them pass.
First up, the next pastry-inspired codename for the Android OS will be Gingerbread, according to a Googler. It is anybody’s guess what name will begin with “H” though.
Next, straight from your favorite science-fiction movie comes this statement from Franz Och, Google’s Head of translation services: “We think speech-to-speech translation should be possible and work reasonably well in a few years’ time” Yes, apparently in a couple of years we will be able to talk in a language and have a phone say the same thing in another. This will make for even funnier translations. When you ask your Latino neighbor if he wants to hang out and he suddenly punches you in the face, at least you’ll know who to thank for that.
And lastly, if you’re stuck on an Android version lower than 2.1 you have yet another reason to bash your phone’s manufacturer and to buy the phone directly from Google next time. When Flash 10.1 arrives for Android phones, it will only work on version 2.1. However, Flash 10.1 is supposed to arrive the first half of this year. Maybe by then most phones will be updated to 2.1.

Name of Next Android Release to be “Gingerbread”
Feb 9th
In a post on LWN.net, Brian Swetland reveals the name of Android’s next release.
“We maintain a set of patches on top of Linux, which we periodically rebase to the latest released Linux kernel. We’ve been doing this roughly every other kernel release since about 2.6.14. This week we’re finalizing our move to 2.6.32 for the Android ‘Froyo’ release, and we’ll likely be on .33 or .34 for ‘Gingerbread.’”
So what do you think “H” will be? Hamburger probably won’t work, as it doesn’t fall under the “sweets” category. Maybe they’ll use Hersheys, Hot Fudge, or possibly Hollow Chocolate Bunnies.
Yummm…. Bunnies.
