Google Suggest Gets Location-Aware, Too

href=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/14/google-suggest-local/&service=bit.ly”> width=”51″ height=”61″ src=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/14/google-suggest-local/” align=”right”/>

src=”http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/google-mobile-local-260.jpg” alt=”" title=”google-mobile-local-260″ width=”260″ height=”182″ class=”alignright size-full wp-image-184655″ />Just last week href=”http://mashable.com/2010/01/07/near-me-now-googles-mobile-homepage-is-location-aware/”>, Google added location-aware results to mobile searches on both the iPhone and Android platforms. Now that href=”http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2010/01/optimized-search-suggestions-using-your.html” >geographical awareness comes to Google Suggest, the feature that tries to anticipate your search query based on its relative popularity with other users (which can often href=”http://mashable.com/2009/08/11/funniest-google-suggest-results/”>lead to some humorous results).

Ostensibly to save you time typing in your search query on mobile devices, the search suggestions are now based on your phone’s current or last known location. Ideally this will improve the relevancy of those suggested results by optimizing them based on where you are.

In order to take advantage of the new feature, you’ll have to turn on “Save recent locations” and “Allow use of device location” under the Settings link on the google.com home page. You may also have to refresh the google.com page on your phone’s browser in order to see the location-optimized suggestions.

It’s another step in Google’s march into local territory. Anyone have predictions on what will be next?

Near Me Now: Google’s Mobile Homepage is Location Aware

href=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/07/near-me-now-googles-mobile-homepage-is-location-aware/&service=bit.ly”> width=”51″ height=”61″ src=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/07/near-me-now-googles-mobile-homepage-is-location-aware/” align=”right”/>

href=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/near-me-now.jpg”> class=”alignright size-full wp-image-180183″ style=”margin: 10px;” title=”near me now” src=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/near-me-now.jpg” alt=”" width=”260″ height=”190″ />Go to href=”http://google.com” >Google.com in your iPhone or Android browser and you’ll see a small new addition to the homepage: a tiny href=”http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2010/01/finding-places-near-me-now-is-easier.html” >Near Me Now option below the search box. The new functionality turns your location into an automated search query and makes finding or learning about places in your immediate vicinity a no-brainer.

id=”more-180179″>

The U.S.-only functionality uses GPS on your device to pinpoint your whereabouts and sort nearby results — right on the Google.com mobile homepage — into the following functional categories: Explore right here, restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and ATMs and banks.

In fact, the “Explore right here option” serves up an instant drop-down menu, providing you with results that are literally right in front of you. You’ll immediately get a quick glance at a venue’s Place Page rating and its distance from you. As a result, the simple and smart addition to the mobile href=”http://mashable.com/category/google”>Google experience is bound to be both a big time saver and a boon for href=”http://mashable.com/2009/09/24/google-place-pages/” >Place Pages.

It’s no mystery that Google is trying to href=”http://mashable.com/2009/12/31/2010-location-predictions/”>attack mobile location-based services and customer review sites like Foursquare and Yelp head-on, and actively promote its Place Pages. This update is a natural progression to help it do just that. We do have to wonder, however, as to why the functionality isn’t a part of the Google Mobile app yet.

If you’re not clear about how Near Me Now works, you can watch this rather hokey video demonstration:

CONTEST: Win 2 Tickets, Airfare, and Hotel to the NHL Winter Classic in Boston

NHL Winter Classic LogoMashable is proud to be offering one lucky reader and a friend the chance to attend the third annual NHL Bridgestone Winter Classic in Boston, MA, between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Boston Bruins!

The NHL has been one of the most active sports leagues in the social media realm. They’ve been organizing fan tweetups, creating social networks through Twitter Lists, and, of course, holding Twitter contests.

Now the NHL is reaching out through social media channels in order to get two of our readers to Boston, MA, for the NHL Winter Classic Game on January 1, 2010. On top of that, they’re providing round-trip airfare and hotel for the night of December 31.

Here’s how to enter:

1. Post in the comments below, providing a link to either an image or a video that uniquely demonstrates your NHL fandom. This could be a cheer, an outfit or anything you can come up with, but it must focus around you and the NHL or a specific NHL team.

2. Make sure that the title of your picture or video includes the hashtag #MashableNHLContest. Post your media, with the hashtag in the title, on a site such as Flickr, 12Seconds.TV, or YouTube.

3. After the end of the contest on Sunday, December 27th at 11:59 PM PT, we will pick our favorite photo or video and contact that person to get him or her two tickets, plus airfare and hotel accommodations, to the NHL Winter Classic. We’re looking primarily for entertainment value, creativity, and NHL fan spirit.

4. Only one comment per person, please (duplicates will be disqualified). Please use a Disqus account to comment, or sign in as a guest. We’ll need to pull your email address from your comment to notify you if you’ve won, so Twitter and Facebook Connect do not work!

Local search on mobile: change is coming!

We don’t have to tell you how important search has become the last decade. Our need for a good search engine has grown as internet has grown to the information monster it nowadays is. Almost everything that we want to find has become the speaking needle in an haystak. Also ourselves and our (online) businesses have become a needle. We try to become a bigger needle with search engine optimalization, internet marketing and online pr. But it is one hell of job to get it done. Luckily there are proffessionals that can help you out. What we see is that search engines have become more accessable and understandable for these proffessionals. They know exactly what to do to let you become a bigger needle. But what we have noticed is that these proffessionals have missed out on something: mobile local search. We think that it will play a big part of the key to running a succesfull online/offline business instead of staying a small needle.
Mobile search is getting more important with the day and local search in particular! Not just only because of the exponantional growth of internet (on mobile) but also because of the latest development in the mobile market. Nowadays phones are equipped with hardware that we couldn’t even carry with us a few years ago  without getting an hernia along with it. The latest phones have for example WIFI, 3G, HSDPA, GPS, A COMPASS, A HD CAMERA and much more! Especially the combination of fast internet, GPS and a compass makes it a very relevant device to use for mobile search. The results from the search engines being changed realitime and adjusted to your location using the embedded hardware. That means that the user gets local results. But this isn’t a obvious basic feature of search engines. You will have to register for example at Google Maps with your business to become present in local search. As a result of this the little needle around the corner (that have optimized itself for local mobile search) get’s shown in the results over the big needle (that didn’t register) that would have been showed otherwise.We are probably telling you nothing new, but we get more and more locals results without even adding a location or a city in a search session.
For example the picture below:
We have searched for a supermarket in Google with our iPhone. Google is clever enough to use the capability of the iPhone and it’s signal to present us local results on the keyword of supermarket. But strange enough is the supermarket around the corner not presented in the results. So now we wonder…does Google know everything about us as we don’t like the service and the pizza’s there of has this supermarket forgot to optimize itself for local search and so didn’t register at Google Maps? We think the last one…although we hope so!

change is coming

We don’t have to tell you how important search has become the last decade. Our need for a good search engine didn’t dissapear as internet grew to the information monster it  is nowadays. Almost everything that we want to find has become the needle in an haistak. So are our (online) businesses. We are trying to become a bigger needle with searchengine optimalization, internetmarketing and online pr. But it is one hell of a job to get it done and stay at a certain level. Luckily there are proffessionals who can help you out. They tend to know exactly what to do to let you become a bigger needle. But search engines keep on developing what makes it harder for everyone to keep track on al these developments. And as far we know is that more change is coming and you shouldn’t miss out on it: mobile local search. We think that it will play a big part of running a succesfull online/offline business instead of staying a small needle. In fact, it’s not hard to imagine mobile search gonna be even bigger than online search as there are more possibilities and more purposes to search (think augmented reality, QR-codes, price comparison etc.).
