Conan Puts The Tonight Show for Sale on Craigslist

src=”http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/conan.jpg” align=”right” style=”margin: 10px;”>At least there’s some more humor coming out of the href=”http://mashable.com/2010/01/11/nbc-conan-leno-kimmel/”>NBC late night debacle. On this evening’s Tonight Show, Conan O’Brien joked that he’s putting the program for sale on Craigslist — while he still can.

However, it appears that the listing itself is no joke, and can be found under the for sale/wanted > collectibles category in Los Angeles. Titled “4 SALE: BARELY-USED LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW,” Conan’s looking for your best offer, but also “willing to trade for Coldplay tickets.” /> id=”more-184743″> /> Here’s the href=”http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/clt/1551463643.html” >full listing, which includes some additional parting shots at NBC’s expense:

Conan Wins the Hearts and Minds of the Internet

href=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/12/conan-obrien-statement/&service=bit.ly”> width=”51″ height=”61″ src=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/12/conan-obrien-statement/” align=”right”/>

src=”http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/conan.jpg” align=”right” style=”margin: 10px;”>The ongoing saga revolving around href=”http://mashable.com/2010/01/11/nbc-conan-leno-kimmel/”>NBC’s late night lineup took a sharp turn toward its climax this afternoon, with Conan O’Brien href=”http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/12/conan-obrien-says-he-wont-do-tonight-show-following-leno/” >issuing a statement to tell “people of earth” that he will resign as host of The Tonight Show if it’s moved to a later time slot.

The response has been overwhelming, with the news topping Twitter’s trending topics, and users quickly voicing their support with “Team Conan” and #teamconan tweets. Here’s a look at the huge spike in Conan tweets this afternoon:

src=”http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/conantweets.jpg”>

Beyond Conan apparently having plenty of fan support (and Jay Leno’s fans perhaps not yet on the href=”http://mashable.com/social-media/twitter/”>Twitter bandwagon), the transparency and sincerity of Conan’s statement certainly isn’t hurting the cause.

The comedian apparently href=”http://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/7682413211″ >spent all night writing it, and manages to be both grateful, truthful and deeply loyal to The Tonight Show institution, all while making NBC look like one of the more evil entities to grace the face of the earth. My favorite part: “My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction.”

Good luck with NBC trying to shuffle its lineup, with or without Conan, with words like that coming from someone who has been one of the network’s most visible personalities for 15 years.

Here’s a look at the sentiment of tweets about the situation, courtesy of Crimson Hexagon:

The Twitterverse is clearly on Conan’s side.

“Glee” Returns For a Second Season With an Online Twist

href=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/12/glee-renewal/&service=bit.ly”> width=”51″ height=”61″ src=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/12/glee-renewal/” align=”right”/>

href=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/glee-top.png”> src=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/glee-top.png” alt=”" title=”glee-top” width=”260″ height=”190″ class=”alignright size-full wp-image-182251″ />If you’re a fan of the TV show Glee, you can start jumping (or singing) for joy: Fox href=”http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2010/01/no-surprise-fox-gives-glee-an-early-renewal.html” title=”No surprise, Fox gives ‘Glee’ an early renewal | Show Tracker | Los Angeles Times” >has officially renewed the series for a second season. Not only that, but Glee will be going on a nationwide casting search next month that will include an Internet twist. /> id=”more-182249″> /> The producers of Glee are seeking to fill three new roles for the second season of the show and they will be accepting href=”http://www.fox.com/glee/audition/” >online submissions from amateurs and professionals between the ages of 16 and 26. More details will be announced soon.

Online casting calls aren’t exactly new, but the fact that such a big show — Glee was href=”http://mashable.com/2009/12/15/golden-globe-nominations-2009/” title=”Golden Globe Nominations 2010 Include "Avatar," "Julie & Julia" and "Glee"”>nominated for four Golden Globe Awards last month — is willing to at least entertain the idea of finding someone without using the standard agency process is kind of cool. Granted, our cynical side fully expects the roles to be cast with professionals, regardless of how the audition tapes find their way to producers, but it’s still a nice touch.

Glee has had a strong Internet following since its pilot debuted last May (and was subsequently available for free from iTunes). In August, Fox even tried to add href=”http://mashable.com/2009/08/31/twitter-fringe-glee/” title=”COOL: Reruns of Fringe and Glee With Twitter Commentary”>Twitter commentary to reruns of Glee and the sci-fi show Fringe, although that turned out to be a better idea in theory than in practice.

Are you a fan of Glee? What do you think about using the Internet to find new talent for network TV series? Let us know!

Data from the collected and analyzed tweets show a mixed bag of reactions ranging from utter disappointment to ambivalence and even people lashing out at CNN for deeming the announcement a breaking news story:

Here’s a breakdown of the analysis (or see graph below):

- 36 percent, or more than one third, of the Twitter reactions were sad and disappointed by the news /> – 23 percent, or almost one forth, were tweets lashing out at CNN for labeling the story “Breaking News” /> – 17 percent think Cowell’s departure signifies the end of the American Idol television dynasty /> – 12 percent took the opportunity to tell their Twitter followers that they never watched or liked the show to begin with /> – 11 percent are talking about Cowell’s show The X Factor, and are excited about the possibilities

The No Pants Subway Ride Goes Viral [VIDEO]

Subway Ride in New York City, footage of the stunt is already all over the web. /> id=”more-181577″>

Every January since 2002, a group of brave participants in the Big Apple get together to perform one daring (and more than slightly unsanitary) feat: Riding the subway sans pants.

This year, Improv Everywhere — which is described on its href=”http://improveverywhere.com/missions/the-no-pants-subway-ride/” >website as a group of thousands of “undercover agents” who “cause scenes of chaos and joy in public places” — rallied together close to 3,000 folks in their skivvies to parade through the tubes. The end of the road was Union Square, where the pantless wonders converged after braving the 28-degree chill.

Although the sheer silliness and scale of the prank is noteworthy, perhaps more impressive is how fast footage of the event has leaked onto the web. Improv Everywhere plans to have an official video out next week, but there’s already tons of videos, like the one below, flooding href=”http://mashable.com/social-media/youtube/”>YouTube as we speak.

width=”425″ height=”344″> name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/wF1tdQLzWmc&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1″> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”> name=”allowScriptAccess” value=”always”> wmode=”opaque” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/wF1tdQLzWmc&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowfullscreen=”true” allowScriptAccess=”always” width=”425″ height=”344″>

So the question becomes: Will anyone care enough to tune in next week? Or will they get their fill of fripperies today and today alone? While you ruminate over that notion, check out last year’s official vid below:

Prop 8 Trial YouTube Coverage Blocked by Supreme Court

href=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/11/prop-8-trial-youtube-coverage/&service=bit.ly”> width=”51″ height=”61″ src=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/11/prop-8-trial-youtube-coverage/” align=”right”/>

href=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/us-supreme-court.jpg”> class=”alignright size-full wp-image-181603″ style=”margin: 10px;” title=”us supreme court” src=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/us-supreme-court.jpg” alt=”" width=”260″ height=”190″ />The United States Supreme Court has href=”http://www.latimes.com/news/nation-and-world/la-na-prop-8-12-2010jan12,0,7701011.story” >just ruled to block video coverage of the Proposition 8 trial on YouTube. /> id=”more-181597″>

The Supreme Court’s decision was made following an emergency appeal after Judge Vaughn Walker, the Chief U.S. District Judge assigned to the case, ruled in favor of permitting the YouTube trial coverage.

Due to the nature of the Prop. 8 trial — the controversial California case will determine whether or not the ban of same-sex marriages in the state is constitutional — parties on both sides hold impassioned views about Judge Walker’s original decision to permit time-shifted posting of trial footage to href=”http://mashable.com/social-media/youtube/”>YouTube.

Defenders of Prop. 8 lobbied for the high court emergency appeal because they believed video coverage of the trial would cause “irreparable harm” to witnesses testifying in favor of the ban on gay marriage. On the flip side, the attorneys in opposition to Prop. 8 argued that the public had a right to watch the proceedings on the YouTube.

Regardless of where you stand on the matter, the Prop. 8 trial is yet href=”http://mashable.com/2009/10/19/twitter-australia-courts/”>another example of how social media and the online distribution of courtroom activities has become a topic that judges must now address.

Dazzboard 2.0 offers Web-Based syncing

Dazzboard 2.0

Those of you that ditched the iPhone for the latest Android device only to find out that iTunes is now useless to you now have something to look forward to. Dazzboard 2.0 looks to be very promising as it fills the gap that Google has left wide open since Androids conception.

Dazzboard 2.0 offers easy management of your photos, videos, music and applications between your Android device and your computer. It also offers easy uploading of your photos to Facebook and flickr accounts and uploading videos to youtube as well.

It is currently running in beta but seems to be very promising for Android’s future. I wouldn’t be surprised if Google starts taking a look at this for themselves and we might be seeing another buyout from the Search Giant.
