Motorola HS1001 (Home Phone) in Action

Motorola was in attendance at this year’s CeBIT and they were showing off the new HS1001 home phone made in conjunction with Binatone.  The omnipresent Nicholas Charbonnier (Charbax) was also there and grabbed some video of the device in action.  Running what appears to be a customized version of Android 1.6 experience, the HS1001 handles VoIP, gets emails, and messages just like your handset does. The unit is expected to sell for 99€ in Europe and $149 in the USA when it arrives this summer. As pointed out by Charbax, the phone comes with a speaker-equipped charging station so you can play your Pandora or Slacker Radio stations while docked.

Motorola i1 Tidbits Emerge

A few more details have emerged for the upcoming Motorola i1 handset.  The first iDEN smartphone to run Android is said to be arriving with a 5 megapixel camera now instead of the 3.2 we were originally expecting. Additionally, rumors put the default browser in the hands of Opera Mini instead of the one we’ve all come to expect. Being this this device is not your true Google Android experience, handset makers can add what they see fit to the phone.

Check back with AndroidGuys in the future for more updates as we gather them!

Cliq XT Pamphlet Leaks on Eve of Release

We’ve yet to hear anything official from Motorola or T-Mobile in regards to the release of the Cliq XT.  For a phone that’s rumored to launch tomorrow, both the carrier and handset manufacturer have been super silent.  To confirm that the phone is ready for release,   I spoke with the manager at my local T-Mobile store.  Sounds like it’s ready to go as I was advised they’ve received both dummy, non-working displays as well as the floor model for demonstration.

Engadget was recently passed some images of the brochure for the CLIQ XT showing how sales reps can effectively sell the handset.  Details include talking about the web browser with Flash Lite, the 5 megapixel camera, and MOTOBLUR.  The smart phone also features Flash Lite, multi-touch, and preloaded apps SHOUTcast, Midomi, GoTV, Last.fm, TuneWiki, and SoundHound.

Look for the CLIQ XT to sneak out tomorrow for $129 with a 2-year agreement.

Android On Lockdown: AT&T Removes Best Parts of Android from Backflip

Well folks, if you haven’t heard by now, AT&T’s first Android Handset, the Motorola Backflip, has been locked down and crippled.  In doing this, AT&T has not only removed Google search, but disabled Android’s ability to install non-market apk files outside of the official Android Market by removing the option for BACKFLIP users to install applications from unknown sources.

Why this was done is unknown, but users will no longer be able to install apps purchased on alternative markets.  For developers that utilize the BACKFLIP, this will will also prove troublesome as they will be unable to test apps on the device. The app experience has truly been IPhonified.  Quite frankly, I am disappointed, but not really surprised as AT&T has attempted to control phones and apps within their realm for quite some time.

We know that AT&T is trying very hard to be a gatekeeper. We also know they are not a fan of open standards. What are your thoughts?  Would you buy  this phone? How far do you think this will this go? Did Apple have a role in this?  I know what I think and that is that you should not purchase this phone.  Sorry.

Maybe, but I still wouldn’t put money on it just yet. Check out the video below to see live wallpapers in action.  If you want the ROM, you can get it here.  As always, flash with caution so you don’t brick your device! What do all of you think? Do you want live wallpapers? Tell us your hopes, dreams, and wishes below.
