Motorola Announces “Defy” for European Market

Motorola has added to their Android portfolio today as they unveiled their new, ruggedized Defy handset for European carriers. While it may look like an average touch-only phone, it has what it takes where it counts. Taking its queue from the i1 released earlier this year, the Defy is considered a rugged handset. Essentially, this means the phone can withstand all types of abuse, including water, drops, dust, and scratches.

The hardware is pretty solid on the inside with an 800 MHz OMAP 3610 processor, 1.25GB onboard memory, and 5-megapixel camera. The 3.7-inch screen is protected with Gorilla Glass and has an 480×854 resolution. The Defy comes with Android 2.1 and MOTOBLUR 1.5, with Froyo listed as “being investigated”. Look for this guy later in the fourth quarter of the year (Q4 2010).

Motorola: “Do NOT Load the Leaked 2.2 Upgrade”

Handset maker Motorola is advising Droid X customers to shy away from manually installing the leaked Froyo builds making their rounds.  According to them, this could leave you S.O.L. when it comes to the official update.

WARNING: Do NOT load the leaked 2.2 upgrade that has been floating around on the Internets. There is currently no upgrade path from that load to the official 2.2 load that will be released by early September. Unless you have some plan to flash your phone back to the current official load, you could be stuck on the leaked version.

We understand that you guys get anxious about the latest and greatest, but let’s not forget, the real deal is expected by early September.

Images of Motorola MB520 Kobe Leak Out

Images of the supposed Droid X-esque Motorola Kobe have leaked.  First off, the phone is definitely not Droid x-eque as first thought, but more midrange  As heard earlier, the handset appears to have Motoblur and is going to be launching on AT&T (sigh!).  According to Engadget, the Kobe will also receive an Android 2.2 OTA shortly after release.  I have to say, I really can’t stand Motoblur, but these blurry shots show midrange promise. It certainly looks much better than the Backflip. All we can really do though is wait and see though at this point.

Oh, and as soon as we know more about the Kobe, we will update this post. Hit the source link for more images.

Motorola Brings Trackball Back for Quench XT5

In terms of Android hardware, one thing we haven’t seen much of is trackballs.  With most companies opting for touch-only or optical trackpads, trackballs are few and far between.  In fact, the T-Mobile myTouch series of phones are pretty much the only place to find them here in the United States.  CellPassion has come across a couple of new images which detail the upcoming Quench XT5 and all its fancy buttons and ports.  If these seemingly legit pictures prove to be true, the Android handset appears set to feature 4-way navigation via trackball.

Other details are said to include a 3.2-inch HVGA (320×480 pixels) touch screen, a 5.0-megapixel camera, 256MB RAM/512MB ROM. The Quench XT5 is expected to run Android 2.1 when it bows, presumably, later this year. Don’t look for this in the US though as I suspect Canada might be the closest we’ll come to getting the phone. As many of you already know, the Quench line of phones are for our international friends! Perhaps a variation for us Yankees might be coming in the form of a new Cliq or Cliq XT?

Motorola’s Android update plans

Motorola has posted a detailed Android upgrade list over in their support forums that mostly confirms users’ suspicions, for better and for worse. What’s the worst news? CLIQ and CLIQ XT have been pushed from Q2 to Q3/early Q4… and Devour isn’t getting 2.1 at all.

DROID X is on track as planned for 2.2, and the Backflip will see 2.1 in Q3.

Motorola Locking Down Droid X Leak Using Cease and Desist Scare Tactics

Were you thinking about installing a little bit of leaked Froyo on your Droid X? If so, you might want to read this post.  According to the folks over at at MyDroidWorld,  they have received a Cease and Desist notice from the head of Motorola Information Security demanding they take the leaked version of Froyo for the Droid X down from their servers (other sites have also received this same notice).

While this may just be a tactic to protect customers, one thing is certain: they want the files down ASAP and wil use any means necessary.  Given the company’s history, I wouldn’t be surprised if the reason was purely regarding intellectual property.  See the full notice below.

Pursuant to 17 USC 512(c)(3)(A), this communication serves as a statement that:

As Android is open source, Motorola is using the Droid X’s copyrighted software to argue that the software as a whole needs to be pulled down as soon as possible. Quite clever. It would be interesting to see their response if someone removed the the copyrighted pieces of  UI only.  I have to think that they would have less of an argument for removal.

Overall, I am not sure how serious Motorola is, but these gestapo scare tactics usually work. In fact they seemingly have as the .zip file has already been removed from MyDroidWorld. Try to find it while you can.

Do these tactics anger you? Is Motorola out of line? Do you believe they made a mistake in doing this? Let us know in the comments.
