Opera Mobile Demo at Mobile World Congress [VIDEO]

Mobile Crunch spent a few minutes with a product analyst for Opera Software at Mobile World Congress earlier this week. He demonstrated the forthcoming Android version of their Opera Mobile browser on a Nexus One. Keep in mind that is not an actual app that you can download from them or the Android Market. Rather, this is something they’re hoping an OEM picks up and installs onto a handset. [Video after the jump]

Google CEO: “60,000 Android Devices a Day”

In a keynote speech at Mobile World Congress, Google CEO Eric Schmidt gave us a glimpse into exactly how many Android phones are moving right now.

“We are now shipping more than 60,000 Android devices in the Android industry per day and that number has doubled over the last quarter.  The growth rate is accelerating and we hope the growth rate, as well as the demand, will continue for a very long time.” – Eric Schmidt

We’ve been hearing for the last year or so how Android keeps growing and gaining on other platforms.  Whether it’s AdMob, Flurry, or another company telling us, we hadn’t heard any hard numbers.  Up until now, it’s all estimates and guesswork.  At the current pace, this equates to nearly 22 million Android phones poised to ship in 2010.  What happens when we factor in all the new devices announced at MWC in addition to those still considered rumors?

KPN Beats HTC to the Punch, Unveils Legend

We are all but certain that HTC will unveiling the Legend next week at Barcelona.  There have been a handful of “in the wild” shots this week, leading us to believe the demo models are circulating and the handset maker is ready to show it off.  Unfortunately, they won’t be the first to release any official photos or specs. KPN, a telco in the Netherlands, has just gone live with a few images of the new device with the specs.

Granted, the pictures aren’t high resolution, they still do enough to whet our whistles. The specs are pretty much everything we’ve been expecting so far – 600MHz, Android 2.1, 5 megapixel camera, optical trackpad.   This appears to be a mid-range Android handset and a definite successor the Hero from last year.  Expect this on KPN sometime in early March!  No word on pricing as of yet.

Thanks to Nick from HTCSource for the heads up!

Garmin-ASUS A50 Details Emerge

gamin-a50-android-1265878869

Long long ago, in a galaxy much like our own, Garmin-ASUS announced that they would release an Android device. Considering that MWC is just around the corner, we should start seeing a lot of things that were promised to us a long time ago, like the Garmin-ASUS A50. The A50 is GPS manufacturer Garmin-ASUS’ first venture into the world of Android devices, and it looks to be a good one. For starters, we all know that this device will be packin’ some serious GPS capabilities, like three different ways to pin-point your location and Garmin’s very own turn-by-turn navigation (you know, the kind with maps, traffic… all that good stuff). Another really interesting thing about the A50 is that it supports multiple 3G bands, which would depend on the carrier it goes to. That means T-Mobile, AT&T, and a couple other European service providers could all carry the A50 no problem. The only catch is that there wouldn’t be one A50 with all those bands, just multiple versions. Hit the jump for the full on spec list.

Android 1.6, ARM11 600mhz processor… As you can see, this is turning out to be pretty nice. Throw in a car mount and car power cable (included with purchase), you got quite the deal on your hands. Garmin is pretty smart for using a widely accepted and more known OS for this device considering that stand-alone GPS units will be a thing of the past before you know it. We expect to see a lot more of the A50 at MWC so be on the lookout for details. In the meantime, anyone ready to ditch that car mounted GPS for something a little more multitasking?

Sexy Legend keeps name, Nederland launch near

It looks like HTC’s follow-up to Hero will keep the name and overall appearance leaked in December, unlike the Bravo, which saw a subtle makeover during the interim between leak and…more leaks.

The screencap after the jump, depicting the Dutch site KPM, appears to hold a true life photo of the Legend and it looks pretty sexy, if you ask me. We will probably, as Engadget points out, have a lot more details on this phone once MWC kicks off. As of now, we’re looking at a March launch in Europe and the following specs: 256MB RAM / 512MB of ROM, AGPS, WiFi, FM radio, 3.2-inch display and 5 MP cam.

Unconfirmed Rumor: Garmin to Debut Android Device at MWC

As we near the Mobile World Congress next month, the rumored handsets and announcements are likely to start pouring in.  DigiTimes is reporting today that Garmin plans to unveil a handful of smartphones in Barcelona, one of which will be running Android.

The Garmin-Asustek team plans to unveil its first Android-powered smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade fair, according to Benson Lin, president of Asustek’s handheld device business unit.

We’ll just have to wait and see if this proves to be true.  There are no specs, pricing, or carrier details to report as of yet.  For comparison, they plan to debut a Windows Mobile phone with a 600MHz processor, a 3.5-inch WVGA resistive touch screen, 5-megapixel camera, and GPS of course.
