Nexus One Dev Phone Out of Stock
Aug 20th
The Android Developers blog is saying that all you people who rushed to buy unlocked Nexus One dev handsets have tapped them out! Here is the quote from their blog:
A couple of weeks ago, we arranged that registered developers could buy an unlocked Nexus One via their publisher page in Android Market. We think it’s a good development platform and a nice phone. Apparently, you agree. Somewhat too many of you, in fact; we blew through the (substantial) initial inventory in almost no time, and they’re back-ordered from HTC, who are doing a pretty good job of managing runaway success amid a worldwide AMOLED shortage. Everyone appreciates that it’s important to the platform to get phones in the hands of developers, so we’re working hard on re-stocking the shelves; stand by.
It is good to see that the Nexus One still has legs right now, it will be interesting to see if sales continue to be brisk with the announcement of the G2 this week.

Get a Speed Boost with New N1 Radio
Aug 16th
The XDA Developers site is reporting to day that they have had some of their members reporting a drastic speed increase when in a 3G signal area with the installation of a new radio on their N1′s. The new version of the radio comes from a Korean N1 build, users noticed the version number was different from the American build, and it is identical to the radio installed with the new HTC Desire 2.2 update. They rushed to get the software on their phones, and were rewarded, some say, with 10x more speed on a 3g network.
To update your radio on your N1, you can go to the XDA Forum thread and follow the instructions
to get the new Radio installed and get you your speed boost. Our own Chuck Falzone installed the new radio on his N1, and confirmed that he saw a pretty large speed boost, but nothing like the 10x the normal speed that some XDA users are claiming.
PLEASE NOTE, the process of installing a new radio is not for beginners, and you need to have root access. Please take care and understand that you are doing this at your own risk, having your phone bricked being one of the risks you take. (small chance honestly, but it is there). If you decide to take the plunge and update your radio, let us know how it goes! We are very curious to see if this is truly something that works for everyone.

Nexus One is the First Android to go to stratosphere, via NASA
Aug 5th
NASA recently carried out an operation named “NexusOne PhoneSat” which sent a Nexus One into the stratosphere. The goal of the experiment was to test the phone’s resilience to G-forces for the purpose of creating smaller satellites. The cellphone was strapped at the back of a rocket and sent 28,000 feet into the stratosphere; the crude Myth-buster way. The N1s shot a video of the complete journey going up to 28,000 feet in the sky. This experiment team included two Google employees in addition to some people from NASA.
Thomas Atchison, chairman of the Mavericks Foundation which launched the rocket said,
The purpose of flying the Nexus One is to find a low-cost satellite solution. The radio, processing power, sensors and cameras in smartphones potentially have the same capability as those in satellites. The idea is to drive down satellite cost by using off-the-shelf products and components. Today’s satellites are the size of Greyhound buses, but I believe they are going to get smaller and more frequently deployed. This is a first-step effort.
NASA actually sent two phones into the stratosphere. However, one of them crash-landed on the way back. The maximum speed attained by the safe phone was 2.4 Mach, which stands at about 1,800 MPH. The return speed of the rocket was measured accurately using the phone’s accelerometer. NASA will conduct more research on this.

Government testing Nexus One for real-time translation
Aug 2nd
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have teamed up to explore the options for real-time language translation in Afghanistan.
Three systems are under testing as part of the TRANSTAC project, and one of those happens to utilize a Nexus One for the real-time translation of English to Pashto and Pashto to English. Check out NIST’s video on bridging the language gap below:

HTC Offering SLCD in Addition to AMOLED Displays for Handsets [UPDATE]
Jul 27th
HTC has announced it will be abandoning the AMOLED screens currently used in the Nexus One and HTC Desire. As a replacement, HTC will introduce SLCD screens to its manufacturing process later this summer. See the full press release below.
UPDATE: HTC wrote in to clarify their statement. We’ve since adusted the title of the post. Thank you, HTC!
HTC isn’t necessarily ‘dumping’ AMOLED screens, but rather introducing SLCD into the mix. Both screen types will be used going forward. Having more than one option available should help to ensure demands are met for these awesome devices!
HTC Introduces SLCD Display Technology To Its Portfolio
New Displays to be integrated into HTC Desire and Nexus One
Taoyuan, TAIWAN – July 26, 2010 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced Super LCD display (SLCD) technology into a variety of HTC phones including the HTC Desire and global Nexus One later this summer. The SLCD display offers an exceptional natural balanced colour, clear contrast, broad viewing angles and improved power efficiency.
“HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC’s current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance.”
SLCD is the latest generation of LCD technology that offers improved performance from earlier LCD panels including approximately five times better power management. SLCDs also offer an enhanced viewing experience with wider viewing angles that are enabled by Sony’s new VSPEC III™ technology.

TouchWiz Launcher Ported to Un-Rooted Nexus One Handsets
Jul 24th
If you haven’t seen or found it by now, it is time you know about it. Apparently a hacker over at XDA-Developers has ported the Galaxy S TouchWiz UI to the Nexus One in launcher format. That’s right, you can now install the TouchWiz UI on your N1 using a simple APK file! Having just tried it, I can tell you that it works very well, but users should be warned it is VERY slow. You will especially notice the speed difference if you are or have been using using ADW Launcher of Launcher Pro. Hit the source link to download and install! As always, let us know what you think!
