More Evidence of a Sprint Nexus One?

With the Nexus One headed to Verizon and Vodafone in the coming weeks, customers on other networks are starting to wonder if and when they’re provider will be offering the phone.  One such carrier, Sprint could really use a new Android handset with high end specs like Nexus One.

One of our readers was recently in an online chat with a member of the Sprint team.  Being that he will be ready to get a new handset soon, the subject of the phone came up.

Here’s the interesting part of the transcribed chat:

03/12/2010 11:40:46PM   Rick Bradley: “Questions about upgrading my existing phone”
03/12/2010 11:41:17PM   Agent (Brad M): “May I have your concern in detail?”
03/12/2010 11:42:58PM   Rick Bradley: “Yeah. I’m due for to upgrade my phone to a new handset in the next couple of weeks. I definately want to get the best phone available. I have heard through the rumor mill that Sprint MIGHT be offering the nexus one with google possibly as soon as april”
. I’d really like to use this phone and I’d hate to have to go to verizon.. is there any chance you could confirm or deny this rumor of sprint carrying the nexus one ?
03/12/2010 11:44:08PM   Agent (Brad M): “Sure. Let me check this.”
03/12/2010 11:45:16PM   Rick Bradley: “thank you for checking”
03/12/2010 11:45:28PM   Agent (Brad M): “You are welcome.”
03/12/2010 11:47:02PM   Agent (Brad M): “I am sorry. We do not have any update on the launch of this phone right now.”
03/12/2010 11:47:59PM   Agent (Brad M): “However, I have notated your account.”
03/12/2010 11:48:13PM   Rick Bradley: “in what capacity ?”
03/12/2010 11:48:43PM   Agent (Brad M): “Once we launch this phone, you will be notified with our promotional advertisement.”
03/12/2010 11:49:52PM   Session Ended

While this is not proof of anything concrete, it certainly sounds like Sprint expects to offer the Nexus One in some capacity.   Whether that’s directly through the carrier or more in a supportive role has yet to be figured out.  Also, the echoes a conversation someone else had with the carrier just a few weeks back.

What do you guys think?  Excited by the prospects of the super phone on the Now Network?

Verizon Nexus One Only Available Online, Sense UI? Doubt It

Android Central has gotten hold of a picture showing the Nexus One in Verizon Wireless’ Equipment Guide. The description clearly states that the phone will ONLY be sold through Google’s phone website, as previously speculated.  This confirms that Google will continue pushing people towards online phone shopping, and stick with its current strategy to change the way phones are purchased.

The strange thing about the picture above is the mention of Sense UI as a feature of the phone. However, I wouldn’t get too excited about it. People are just so careless these days when writing up spec sheets. We can probably chalk it up to a typo, since we know Google only wants to sell “Google Experience” devices on their site.

My first thought was the possibility of the Incredible being Verizon’s Nexus One; but then I realized how dumb that sounded and how pissed off Verizon’s customers would be were that the case. The Incredible’s specs are also rumored to be completely different. Sources say the phone will have 6GB of internal storage, along with 1GB of RAM. The Nexus One only has 512MB/512MB. In any case, both phones are coming soon. Now, all we have to do is wait.

Vodafone UK Showing Nexus One “Coming Soon”

Back when the Nexus One was launched, the Google store listed a placeholder for Vodafone and Verizon with a “Spring 2010″ launch.  With the season technically kicking off next Saturday, Vodafone appears to be getting ready to offer the HTC super phone.  The carrier’s website now lists the handset as “coming soon” which has us wondering whether or not they’ll offer it through their own channel in addition to Google’s.  We’ve recently heard similar things about Verizon so we’d not be surprised.  Then again, how else will Google get their store built out and start changing buying habits if they are only another option instead of the option?

Thanks for the heads up Martin!

My Life With The Nexus One (or, How I Became a Rabid Android Fanboy)

It was almost like Christmas, and I was an 8 year old boy again. Only it wasn’t Christmas and this wasn’t a puppy I had found under the tree. It was just after Valentines Day and this was a brown cardboard box in my hands. This brown box was a gift from The Greatest Girlfriend In The World, and it was my drug of choice… a brand new gadget. But it wasn’t just any new gadget; it was a Nexus One.

My HTC Dream had served me well for over the past 12 months, but like any gadget geek I was attracted to the latest and greatest new toy. Faster processors, better screens, more features… this is what keeps me up late at night reading blogs about the next big rumor just a split second before anyone else. For being over a year old, my Dream was in remarkably good shape. It still had the original screen protector on it and there wasn’t a single scratch on it’s surface. The cover for the mini-usb port was still dutifully attached, and there wasn’t a spot of dirt anywhere to be found on it’s pristine white surface. However none of this had mattered since I had heard the first whispers of the Nexus One… the rumored “Google Phone”. The device that would pack the kind of hardware that could finally utilize Android to it’s fullest extent.

And now it was mine.

My Nexus One has usurped my Dreams position in my pocket and become more useful than any other device I’ve ever owned. My constant companion, it has replaced my many other gadgets. No longer do I carry a PSP, an iPod, a phone, and a book in my backpack during my morning commute. I simply slip my Nexus One into my pocket and head out the door. If this device would dispense beer, I’d have no other needs.
I originally purchased my Dream because of Android. I wanted something different and unique. I’ve owned smart phones for years (from my old Blackberry on through an MDA and a Wing) but Android offered something new to me: a truly multimedia experience that I could carry in my pocket and connect my social life while on the go. But even then, it was still lacking. The UI wasn’t quite what I wanted, it was slow, and it didn’t have enough internal memory to really be very useful. Don’t get me wrong, I still dearly love my Dream. But it comes as no surprise to me that Android didn’t hit mainstream attention with the kind of hardware that the Dream had when it launched. Sure, I rooted it and installed different ROMS trying to make it what I wanted it to be. But even then, the Dream still didn’t have the “OMGWTFBBQ” that I wanted it to have.
That’s all changed due to my Nexus One. This machine is equivalent to a Cadillac XLR: pure beauty with a mean ass monster living under the hood.

I feel as though I have joined a club… When encountering another Nexus One owner, we both readily whip out our phones to share any tips or tricks (did you know that speech to text recognizes supercalifragilisticexpialodocious?). I don’t see this camaraderie with any other type of device. Sure, while some would say that Apple/iPhone users share a bond, I’d go so far as to say that it’s more like a cult with His Holiness Jobs looking down from on high instructing his minions on what to do. I have made friends with people in other cities, states, and even nations… simply because of our shared ownership of this handset.

Have I become what I loathe most? Am I the anti-thesis to the iPhone fanboys? The answer is a resounding “YES!” Thanks to the Nexus One, I will resoundingly defend Android on any blog, in any conversation, and during any circumstance. When I run into an iPhone fanboy it’s light versus dark, good versus evil, Jedi versus Sith. My pupils dilate, I begin to sweat, and the arguments move to the tip of my tongue. The only way I could become any worse is if I turned green, grew seven feet tall, and my clothes started to rip (Android SMASH!!).

Thanks to the Nexus One (my Precious!!) my transformation is complete. Sure, it has it’s (few) flaws. But I will say, that no matter what I am doing (outside of a few activities *ahem* with The Greatest Girlfriend In The World) my Nexus One enhances it.  A bastion of entertainment and knowledge at my fingertips, this is my constant companion. Now to figure out how to affix a keg of my favorite brew to it…

Rumor: Verizon Already Training Employees on Nexus One

Boy Genius Report is reporting this morning that Verizon Wireless is currently in the process of training some of their employees on the Google Nexus One. Apparently the information BGR has is based on some e-mails which were bouncing around between curious customers and well-informed reps.  If these rumors are true a launch may be imminent. This news also makes me wonder: does this mean the handset will actually be sold in Verizon Wireless retail stores? Possibly, but I wouldn’t put money on it.

Wherever the phone ends up getting sold it will certainly be available through Google’s webstore, so anyone interested will definitely be able to get it there.  How many Verizon customers are interested in this phone? Would you give up your Droid for it? Let us know in the comments.

Like Your Nexus One? Don’t Wear Your Skinny Jeans!

Attention Nexus One users: do not sit on your Nexus One! The Nexus seen above, owned by Crave UK, just randomly cracked while being charged. According to HTC’s technical support, the damage seen above could not be caused by charging, but by “putting a phone in a tight pair of jeans and sitting down.” HTC is also saying that it will cost around $270 to fix a cracked screen!  Has this happened to any of you out there? If it did, did it happen while charging? Leave comments below.
