DSP’s multimedia home phone
Mar 4th
Do you like the idea of a home phone that controls your t.v., security system, and lights? It would be cool if that phone also offered VoIP via your home network Wi-Fi and could stream music to your headphones, right? It would be even cooler if it ran Android, looked hot, and if had a touch screen positioned on the back side of the device. Well, here’s another concept product that is likely to slip away in the breeze but it meets the criteria for awesomeness above, and what a lovely embodiment of awesomeness it is. DSP is beginning to talk about a product they call…
the first Google AndroidTM-based multimedia handset for the home. Equipped with a user-friendly touch screen and virtual keyboard, the advanced handset delivers an affordable smart phone experience to home subscribers. The next evolution in home phones, the handset opens the door to a range of typical connected applications – from Web browsing, email and widgets to Web radio, Picasa and YouTube uploading – and home-specific applications including:
Universal remote control and interactive TV controller
Digital Living Network Alliance (DNLA) client for local streaming
Home automation and monitoring
Storage manager
As my source points out, the images provided by the company depict a multimedia handset running HTC’s Sense. So, not only are we almost certainly looking at renders but the product probably doesn’t exist outside of a few conversations with potential investors. You can read up on the idea by taking a look at DSP’s website or by downloading a PDF here. In addition to the home phone, the DSP group is offering a reference design for an Android tablet.

HTC Legend pricing announced for UK carrier
Mar 3rd
It was just a week ago when the rumor about HTC Legend and the Hero2 would be hitting the shelves of Sprint first took center stage. Though it seems that, that is no longer the case here. It was officially announced recently that the HTC Legend will be released from Vodafone UK in April. It is also mentioned on Expansys, an online mobile device retailer, that the device will go on sale on April 12 with the price tag of £399.99. As for the Vodafone UK pricing, it is £1.99 with a 2-year contract with £25 a month plan, or for free with a more expensive plan. This is great pricing for such a wonderful device. Let us see how much longer we, the US consumers, have to wait to get our hands on this beauty and lets just hope it won’t be a long wait.

HTC Magic Adds a Plus Sign, Gets Sense
Feb 26th
Almost exactly a month ago the HTC Magic, by way of Rogers up there in good ol’ Canada, let you download an update. It packed some goodies in there, like HTC’s much appreciated and desired Sense User Interface. For most people, that would be good enough. Call it a day, even. But it looks like Rogers wants to make sure that customers still looking for a smartphone know that the current generation of Magic isn’t like the previous version. They want to achieve this so badly, in fact, that they are changing the name of the device. Apparently, the industry has a thing about one version of ‘plus’ or another. So now, Roger’s HTC Magic will forever be known as the Magic+. It’s got a ring to it, doesn’t it? The only real difference seems to be the addition of Sense, and multitouch. No, it won’t get you 2.1 right now, but for $79.99, waiting until the middle of the year to upgrade that software isn’t that bad, right?

New Verizon Wireless inventory screenshot shows HTC Incredible
Feb 24th
You remember what the HTC Incredible is, right? We know, we know, there’s been a few other phones announced between then and now, but hey, you can’t pass up another Sense UI device running Android 2.1. Right? Right. So, let’s get into the meat and bones of this, shall we? According to this recent screen grab of Verizon Wireless’ inventory system, you can clearly see the HTC INC as being listed there. We’re playing a bit of a guessing game here, but we’ll go ahead and agree with the consensus that this is going to be the Incredible. And right above that is the launch kit, so rumors are stating that this means the Incredible could be seeing store shelves pretty soon. Considering the Nexus One is still heading to Verizon, we’re actually not surprised that a device of the same quality, but with Sense UI will be making an appearance as well. Sound familiar, AT&T? No word on release date, of course, or pricing, but as soon as we hear something, we’ll pass on the information. Stay tuned.

Acer Liquid e heading to Rogers
Feb 23rd
Which means, plain and simple, you can feel free to buy it unlocked and run around with it on your AT&T contract. Just wanted to get that out of the way. Okay, so, it looks like Rogers has done what they needed to make sure that they’ve got the (potentially) only Android 2.1 device available in Canada. We added potentially in there because one, the MILESTONE is running 2.0 (which is basically 2.1), and the MILESTONE is probably going to get upgraded sooner than later. If you want to compare apples to oranges, at least that means Rogers has a 2.x device to take on Telus’ 2.x device. So, that’s good. We’re not all that fond of the Acer Liquid e, simply because it’s an underclocked device. Acer put the Snapdragon processor in there, but decided that they should trim it back a bit, for whatever reason. We don’t condone these kinds of actions. As it stands though, the 768 Mhz should get you by just fine. There’s not an exact word on release as of yet, but Rogers is aiming for a Spring date, and will unveil the pricing and other details when the time nears.

ZTE Smooth is a “meh” take on a good idea
Feb 20th
ZTE recently unveiled the Smooth: an Android 1.6 slider with a portrait QWERTY and 2.8″ QVGA display, and it looks like the response is unanimous: It’s a bad knock-off of Palm’s Pre. It is nice to see the form factor popping up, even if it is mot likely for China this august. It’s only a matter of time before another OEM stretches out into this Palm-ish realm, and I hope the next to do it goes for a mig-to-high-range device, as opposed to this decidedly low-end entry into to the race to rip off the Pre. I’ve never been a fan of the portrait hardware keyboards – even when that’s all we really had. But you know, diff’rent strokes for diff’rent folks.

X10 turns up on T-Mo UK site as coming soon
Feb 13th

Sony Ericsson’s much anticipated XPERIA X10 has popped up in the “Coming Soon” section of T-Mobile UK’s website, and you can sign up for email alerts regarding status updates. Something tells me that we will have more info very, very soon though. I am interested to see if SE will stick with the Nexus UX (user experience) moniker that they re-branded the sexy Rachael UI with. Whatever they dub it, “UX” does make more sense than “UI,” as the bundled apps go way beyond the superficial sheen one immediately recognizes when first glimpsing the device. For example, check out the camera software’s facial recognition capabilities after the break:
