International iPhone 4 carrier plans and rates
Jul 29th
What you’ll pay for an iPhone 4 on Rogers/Fido, more to come!
International carriers are finally starting to release their iPhone 4 plans and rates, and as more countries now have multiple providers and unlocked iPhones, does that mean things will be more competitive than ever?
Nope. You say monopoly, I say oligopoly, they’ll still take every penny they can.
We’ll post them as we find them, and if you’ve come across the plans and rates in your area, drop them in the comments and we’ll add them here.
Canada, Bell
Bell has announced similar promotions, including the $30/6GB and the iPhone/iPad sharing, though for only $10.
Canada, Rogers/Fido
Rogers/Fido has just put up a post detailing upgrade costs, along with a tool to find out what you’re eligible for. In addition, they’re once again offering a special $30/6GB data plan for a limited time, and are also adding a $20 option to share your iPhone 4 data with your iPad.
Now I’m no math wiz but I do know $20 for sharing data compared to $30 for doubling it doesn’t sound like a great deal… yet. Let’s hope Rogers improves on that asap.

We talked about the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 coming to Rogers a while back but we were missing a key piece of information. The X10 is now slated for April 15th, 2010 release according to inside sources. As you may recall the phone was set with a worthy line-up of qulity specifications. Since the first announcement there have been rumours of the X10 finding its way to Android 2.1+ before the end of the year which is something to look forward to and hopefully will give some assurance to prospective buyers. The final list of specifications for the phone are:

Rogers and Fido to Keep iPhone Tethering Free (with some Caveats)
Mar 24th
Rogers (and subsidiary Fido) announced today via their RedBoard blog that the initial free tethering promotion for the iPhone would become the official policy going forward — free tethering for everyone. Almost.
Effective immediately, tethering will continue to be included at no additional charge for Rogers and Fido customers who subscribe to data plans of 1 GB and above (excluding those listed below).
“Those listed below” are:
Tethering cannot be used with data plans of less than 1 GB. Also, it cannot be used with the new 1 GB+ One Rate Roaming plans (except Rocket stick plans), Family Shared Data & Voice Plans and Smartphone & Rocket stick shared data plans.
Complaints are already piling up about some of those exclusion in the blog comments, of course.
This policy also applies to BlackBerry, Android (if supported by the OS), and all other smartphones with qualifying data plans.
Since I was posting via iPhone Bluetooth tether from a local coffee shop yesterday, I for one appreciate and will make good use of it. However, our frigid Canadian hearts go out to our US friends who, 9 months later, still haven’t heard word one from AT&T about official iPhone tethering…

Rogers MyAccount for Android
Mar 20th
Rogers has shown their devotion to Android and that they see it as a serious competitor in the mobile industry. How? Approximately a week ago Rogers released a much awaited application for Rogers users that allows one to natively access some of the most used account information. Up until a week ago the only way to access this information was to check MyAccount through the web interface.
Features available in this app are:
- View current Voice, Data, and Messaging use for the month so far
- Check account balance, billing cycle, and last payment
- Make a payment directly within application
- Common help and support issues
- Available in English and French languages
- Feedback form
This application has been available on iPhone since November with availability coming to more devices such as Blackberry and other smartphones in the near future. I have already found the app a great help in informing me when I’m getting close to exceeding my voice usage, a common problem! I assume that this app will become a standard application that is released with all Rogers Android devices from now on. This application comes amidst a plethora of other great Android news many of you have already hear about this week. This other good news includes the availability of paid apps and the new Nexus One that is compatible with Rogers. Download the MyAccount app from the Android Market because it is one you can’t do without.

Average Samsung Phone Coming To Rogers
Mar 6th
If the Samsung Galaxy Spica were the new kid in school, he/she would get made fun of for his/her out of date clothing and boring personality. While there has been much phone release news in the past few weeks, the Samsung Galaxy Spica is nothing to get excited about. As a community of highly informed Android owners we always want the latest phones with the best features, and therefore there isn’t a much of a chance that this phone will be making our wish list. On the others side of things this phone could be a great entry level phone for new comers to Android. It’s technical specifications are as follows:
- Android OS 1.5
- 3.2-inch touchscreen display
- 320 x 480 pixels
- 3.2 megapixel camera + video
- 800MHz processor
- 3.5mm headset jack
- speakerphone
- WiFi + A-GPS
- holds up to 32GB with a microSD
- 1500 mAh lithium-ion battery
The phone will ship with a 3 year agreement price of $79.99 and an outright cost of $449.99. A release date is not yet known.

Rogers’ Magic To Be Re-Branded as HTC Magic +
Mar 1st
Attention Canadians: Android Guys has some news regarding the Rogers’ HTC Magic. Very soon you will notice something different when you go to look at the HTC Magic at your local Rogers’ Store. Is it a new finish? No. Sorry. What about a sleeker look? No again! Well folks, the handset has been re-branded at the HTC Magic+. You might be asking what exactly does the + mean? Well you get all the same features, such as the 3.2-inch touchscreen display (resolution of 320 x 480), 3.2 megapixel camera, and the Android Market (with paid apps soon, hopefully!) Actually, the + seems to be referring to the addition of the HTC Sense UI, which has multi-touch capabilities. Oh, and the Magic+ will be getting it’s very own 2.1 update toward the middle of the year! I don’t know about you, but 79.99 sure seems like a good price. If I didn’t have an HTC Hero already, I would definitely be checking this device out.

Canadian LG Eve to Make the Jump to Android 1.6
Feb 3rd
According to various sources, including LG Canada themselves, the LG Eve will be receiving an upgrade to Android version 1.6. It is only so long before version 1.5(Cupcake) is no longer on any device which really goes to prove how quickly Android is progressing.
Unfortunately this update will not be an OTA(Over-the-air) update, but rather like HTC Dream and Magic customers had to recently do, LG Eve owners will have to acquire the update from the Rogers website. LG has given a rough estimate that it will be released sometime this Spring. Looks like most Rogers Android owners (ie Dream, Magic) now have an update to look forward to in the upcoming months.
