HTC Legend Root Updated, now Working for Software Version 1.32.xxx

HTC Legend was the first phone from HTC to get the Android 2.1 OS. This made it the most popular phone at that time and the first one to be forgotten thereafter. The guys at MoDaCo released a root procedure for phones with HBOOT version of 0.43 or lower and software version of 1.31.xxx series only. Any versions other than this and the phone cannot be rooted.

However, the problem was that, more than half of the Legends that arrived later after the initial release phase shipped with a software version of 1.32.xxx. I was stuck with the same and there was no method to root it until now. However, the guys at XDA have come up with a method to downgrade the software version which now allows a root.

This method has been tried and tested by me. In this post, I will guide you through the steps I followed to the root.

What you will need

Here is a list of things you will need.

  1. The GoldCard tool to create a GoldCard (948 KB)
  2. Hack4Legend (420 KB)
  3. RUU 1.31.xxx for Legend (128 MB)
  4. Android SDK (22.9 MB)

These are our downgrading tools. It will only downgrade the software version to 1.31.xxx. We also need tools to root the device. The rooting tools include:

  1. Legend rooting tool (226 MB)
  2. Legend custom ROM from Rodriguezstyle (optional 133 MB)

Now, we have all that we need to start. For the first part, use the steps given in this forum post at XDA. The #1 post has been updated and is the one that works. However, make sure you check the replies to some good number of pages until you develop an idea of possible problems and their solutions.

After following the above procedure, you will have a downgraded phone ready to root. Now, come to the second step where you root using this guide at Unlocker.

Finally, load a custom ROM using another guide at Unlocker.

Possible problems faced during the root and downgrade

  • Phone is not recognized on USB, USB device is not recognized or adb fails.

TO solve this issue, go to Start Menu, right click and get the device manager. In the device manager, select the Android phone and update its driver. Select the android SDK as the driver installation folder.

  • After a certain Reboot, the phone is not connected to USB for adb operations

The phone loads the bootloader driver. Follow the step above to put it back to the adb driver.

Apart from this, follow the steps religiously and you will have a root in the end like I did. Kudos to wag3slav3 for the hack.

Droid X Rooted in spite of all the eFuse ballyhoo

Motorola Droid X raised some eyebrows regarding its rooting with Mobile Crunch going ahead to suggest its readers not to buy Droid X and many others believing that the eFuse protects the bootloader against any tampering by hard-fusing the phone in case of any attempt. Moments later after the rumor started taking ground, BGR clarified this as being a rumor and we provided coverage of these events, from the inception of this rumor to the release of an official statement from Motorola.

Now that the Droid X is out, hackers have been at work continuously and finally, some have claimed success in rooting the Droid X. Yes. The eFuse protected and (rumored) hack-proof Droid X is now hacked and pwned!

A post at the DroidX forum proudly announces this by saying “We has rootz!”. The steps to root, which you can follow at your own risk, are given as:

Step 1: Set up ADB
Step 2: Push exploid to /sqlite_stmt_journals “adb push exploid /sqlite_stmt_journals”
Step 3: type “adb shell”
Step 4: type “cd sqlite_stmt_journals”
Step 5: type “chmod 755 exploid”
Step 6: type “./exploid” and follow directions on screen
Step 7: type “rootshell”
Step 8: type in password “secretlol”
Step 9: your in root!
Step 10: mount your sdcard to pc and put Superuser.apk and su in the sdcard
Step 11: unmount sdcard
Step 12: in adb (make sure your still in root with the # sign) type in:
– cp /sdcard/Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
– cp /sdcard/su /system/bin/su
– chmod 4755 /system/bin/su

However, it is highly recommended that you check out the actual thread at the DroidX forum for some important tips and information on the root.

Some users have already reported that this works and hopefully it does. For any support, join the thread and post your questions in replies.

Kudos to the guys at DroidX forum.

Unrevoked Root Method for HTC Incredible

Looking for a pain-free way to root your HTC Incredible?  The folks responsible for unrEVOked have released unrEVOked 3 which now supports a one click rooting process for the HTC Incredible.  Its quick, easy ,and best of all, there are no commands to enter.  Like its predecessors, version 3 uses an exploit to unlock the NAND flash long enough to flash a custom recovery image which allows for root access.  Linux and Mac users will find a neat and tidy self -contained program, while Windows users are required to download the necessary drivers separately.  Overall its a small price to pay for root access.

Has anyone had any luck with the current version unrEVOked?  Sound off in the comments.

Video Tutorial: Hack your Nexus One

What you do to your phone is your responsibility. Following this procedure *will* void your warranty. It could also break your phone. We will not promise technical support, though you may find help in the forums. If you want Sense on your Nexus One, proceed with caution.

I’ve gone back and forth on the topic of rooting my Nexus since I first heard it was possible. At first, I didn’t see much benefit over a stock configuration. But as the hacks got cooler and the ROMs got hotter, I found the prospect difficult to resist. So here’s a video of me doing it for the first time. Click each link below for the instructions and files required for each step:

Step 1: Unlock the bootloader
Step 2: Root the phone
Step 3: Replace the recovery image (it is highly recommended that you back up the stock ROM after the recovery is installed).

At this point, you need to wipe your phone. If you flash the ROM without wiping immediately beforehand, you will not be able to boot and will need to restore your nand back-up, wipe, then flash the ROM. This is covered in the video at the appropriate time.

Step 4: Flash the ROM. (Read what Paul tells you to, folks.)

See the whole process on video:

My sources are the pages linked to in this post, pretty much everyone who cooks Android ROMs, and many, many great folks on Twitter.

Root Your G1 For New Users

Steps to root your G1 and install your first custom ROM (at your own risk).

Introduction

I need to say that though this process has been done 1000’s of times, there is always a chance of bricking your phone rendering it useless. With that said read everything and watch the videos several times before attempting this. When you are ready go ahead and download all the files ahead of time so you have them on hand to speed up the process. With that said, let’s begin. Text instructions follow the video below, which is the first of two.
