Rumor: Sony Ericsson Xperia Series to See Android 2.2 in 2010

One phone we’ve been hearing about for what seems like an eternity is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.  After getting announced back in 2009, we’ve been patiently awaiting its arrival here in the US.  The biggest problem we’ve seen facing the X10 is that it’s slated to arrive with Android 1.6 under the hood.  According to CNET Asia, the Xperia line of handsets could get an update  to Android 2.2/Froyo  later this year. We’d previously heard that the phones will ultimately get an update to a newer version of Android, but which exact iteration wasn’t clear.

We assumed this would be version 2.1 but were informed today that it “will be an Eclair variant, so it could be 2.1 or even 2.2″, according to the spokesperson.

To dampen your enthusiasm just bit, we should point out that “later this year” has a 9-month window. This could be pushed out near the end of the year and possibly later than other handset makers. For all we know, Android could be at 2.5 or 3.0 by then.

Rumor: Verizon Already Training Employees on Nexus One

Boy Genius Report is reporting this morning that Verizon Wireless is currently in the process of training some of their employees on the Google Nexus One. Apparently the information BGR has is based on some e-mails which were bouncing around between curious customers and well-informed reps.  If these rumors are true a launch may be imminent. This news also makes me wonder: does this mean the handset will actually be sold in Verizon Wireless retail stores? Possibly, but I wouldn’t put money on it.

Wherever the phone ends up getting sold it will certainly be available through Google’s webstore, so anyone interested will definitely be able to get it there.  How many Verizon customers are interested in this phone? Would you give up your Droid for it? Let us know in the comments.

Rumor: Motorola Opus One Renamed to ‘i1′

The eagle-eyed chaps over at Engadget just picked up on another Android-based Motorola handset that passed through the FCC. Doing their best impression of Encyclopedia Brown, they’re guessing that the handset with the model name of ‘i1′ is the same we’ve previously reported as the Opus One. For those not familiar, this would be the first iDen handset to run Android and likely end up on Sprint or Boost Mobile.

In addition to iDEN, the handset includes Bluetooth 2.1 and WiFi. Engadget assumes, and we tend to agree, that this will be a smartphone. Codenames and final products get changed all the time so this wouldn’t surprise us in the least. Now the question becomes, when will we see this phone announced? Perhaps a few weeks from now at CTIA?

A quick recap of the specs gathered to date:

  • 3.1″ HVGA (320—480) capacitive touchscreen
  • 3 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash
  • Accelerometer, Proximity sensor, A-GPS
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Bluetooth
  • microSD card slot
  • 2.5mm headset jack
  • Home, Menu, Back, Speaker buttons are capacitive buttons with haptic feedback
  • iDEN PTT & PTX
  • Android LBS which is integrated into the iDEN GPS engine
  • 58mm in width, 118mm in length, 100g weight
  • 512MB Flash / 256MB of RAM
  • 64k and 128k iDEN SIM card support
  • Motorola dual-mic technology noise-canceling for noisy enviroments
  • Flash Lite v3.1.x
  • Corporate email client with ActiveSync support, MOTONAV navigation app, barcode scanner, and document viewer.

Opinion: What Does Verizon’s Nexus One Mean for Sprint?

Neowin, with help from their inside informant, reported that Verizon will be getting the Nexus One on March 23rd. With the CDMA version of the phone spotted passing through the FCC, this date seems very likely. However, with all this excitement comes more questions.

When the Nexus One was announced by Google, T-Mobile-ers were ecstatic. On the flip side of the GSM spectrum, there was the AT&T crowd, who sulked and wept over the lack of support for their 3G bands. Keep in mind, this doesn’t stop AT&T users from using the phone on EDGE; there just isn’t a subsidy plan available to them. They have to buy the phone unlocked for a whopping $529.

With the CDMA version of the phone arriving, a slightly different scenario is beginning to take shape. You see, Sprint and Verizon use the same bands. This is the reason why Sprint users are able to roam onto Verizon’s network if they’re ever out of their service area. This means that a Verizon suited Nexus One is 100% compatible with the Sprint network and it’s 3G goodness. Sprint users are longing for the Nexus One. Currently, Sprint only has two Android options: the sexy and slow Hero, or the fast and bulky Moment. Why can’t Sprint users have a combination of both? The Nexus One is the ideal smartphone for any Android fan. It’s blazing fast, sexy as a pin-up, and gets updates right when Google releases them. It’s a dream phone. So why isn’t there any concrete news about Sprint carrying Nexus Uno? The customer service email saying that it’s coming could have just been a standard response for phone inquiries.

GSM and CDMA activation work very differently. With GSM, you can just pop your SIM card into any GSM capable phone. With CDMA, you have to register your ESN number with your carrier. In order for the CDMA version of the Nexus One to work with Lil’ Yellow, Sprint would have to add the ESN numbers to their database–something they won’t do unless they decide to support it. Sprint doesn’t allow unlocked phones onto its network. Without a Google/Sprint agreement, Sprint users who want the Nexus One would be forced to jump ship (unless the Supersonic and its months of waiting for OS updates are enough to keep you onboard).

It’s no secret that Sprint is struggling. The number three wireless carrier has been taking subscriber hits every quarter since merging with Nextel. If there’s any carrier that needs the Nexus One, it’s Sprint. This is what makes the situation so confusing. How could a company that’s in the process of rebuilding itself pass on carrying Google’s flagship device? A Nexus One running on Sprint’s unbelievable rate plans would be the deadliest combo in the market. Google wants to have its superphones available on all carriers, so surely, they’re in talks with Sprint. True, Sprint is very busy rolling out WiMAX and fixing their customer service, but how can they be too busy for Google? Answer: They can’t.

Right now, Sprint has no great high-end phone. For many of the users who have left Sprint, this is one of their biggest complaints. For a company like Sprint to make it big, they need the help of a giant. Google is the key to Sprint’s success. Sprint ignoring the Nexus One is like a physicist ignoring the laws of gravity. Sprint knows the value of Android and realizes its potential in the future mobility. They’ve read our posts, followed our coverage, and seen their customer service rep’s email. Yet, they never came out and said, “sorry, we have no plans to carry the Nexus One.” Silence is the key here. True, when there’s a rumor going around the Interwebs, a company doesn’t have to respond (and probably won’t). However, this only holds true when the rumor is started by an outside source. When a company, itself, leaks the information, it becomes their job to clarify. When Walmart accidentally put up a page saying that they’re selling the Nexus One, they had to come out and apologize for the error. Sprint’s own customer service said the device is coming. Had that been a mistake, Sprint would have had to issue a statement.

With a Sprint-ready Nexus One hitting the market this month, there’s just no way for them to ignore it. If Sprint didn’t end up carrying the Nexus One, I’d be shocked (I’d also probably leave Sprint after 5 years of yellow love). These Are the Droids claims that Sprint already has a Nexus One placeholder in their database. Also, just a few days ago, one of our readers, DLP, posted the following comment regarding our previous coverage of the matter.

“I had a problem with my Instinct last night and I was talking to CSR about phones while we were waiting for things to finish on the Instinct and I asked him about the Nexus One coming to Sprint and from what he told me it looks like the Nexus One will be coming to Sprint in April. We will see!!!”

For Sprint’s sake, I pray that the above intel is legit. It wouldn’t make sense for Sprint to pass on the Nexus One, especially if it means them being the only major carrier in the US without it. Even AT&T may get their own 3G capable version. If you’re a Sprint user and are on the wire about whether to stay or bounce–stay. The Nexus One is coming. I’m almost sure of it. The real question is… when?

UPDATE: I just saw this picture over at AndroidForums. It’s from less than a month ago and shows a live chat conversation on Sprint’s site that confirms the Nexus One. However, I’m not sure how authentic it is. It’s strange that it only merited a single response.

Google Really is Giving Away Free Nexus One and Droid Handsets to Developers

Last night I was both very pleasantly surprised and somewhat scared when I got email with the following snippet:

“Due to your contribution to the success of Android Market, we would like to present you with a brand new Android device as part of our developer device seeding program. You are receiving this message because you’re one of the top developers in Android Market with one or more of your applications having a 3.5 star or higher rating and more than 5,000 unique downloads.”

Naturally, I was reluctant since I’ve had one too many letters promising me everything from the free Viagra to 1,000,000.00 British pounds.  Further, the email was linking me to not very officially looking form at Google docs. So I inquired. Two emails and 12 hours later it turns that this is not a hoax or elaborate phishing attempt. Indeed, I was pointed to this article as proof that this is real.

Yes, I do have an app that qualifies and yes I filled up the form! I’m excited and I also think that this is a very, very smart move on part of Google which will undoubtedly recruit more developers.  For those who don’t qualify, perhaps this might push them to try harder to deliver better apps.  The devices offered vary by market but in US it’s ether Nexus One or Motorola Droid. No disrespect to you happy Droid owners but dear Google, can I have a Nexus pleeeze? I will keep you posted but it seems that Android-freebie season is in a full swing!

Rumor: All Android Phones to See Android 2.1 in US

While some users are are enjoying Android 2.1 on their Nexus One handsets and others (Droid) are poised to see it any day now, the rest of us are left to wonder just how much life and OS support remains.  G1 users are probably the most concerned here due to the limited amount of memory.  If the latest  rumor proves to be true, all Android owners in the US will see Android 2.1 next quarter.

According to a source for AndroidAndMe, some handsets will not be able to take all (live wallpapers) of Android 2.1 features but will maintain the general backbone (firmware).  This matches up with previous information we’ve heard before where Android 2.1 might be available in pieces via apps and select downloads.

As of right now, it’s said that the carriers and handset makers are hammering out details as to how and when the updates will roll out.  AndroidAndMe’s sources also indicate that some handsets will require a wipe to get the update and may or may not involve tethering.

G1 and myTouch 3G owners are rumored to be among the first to see these updates if/when they start next quarter.

Rumours Say Canada May Have Paid Apps Soon

Android is nothing new in Canada and while we don’t have a very large selection of different handsets, the average person would be able to tell you what it is. We may be quite excited about Android and it’s edgy approach to the mobile scene, but now we want more!

Most people have been content with free apps, but for those who have explored the reaches of Android will know that there is a whole other wonderful world of paid apps available to many others. Rumors have come from the Montreal Gazette and we have pulled conclusions that we could possibly see paid apps in the Canadian Android Market as soon as next week! Google Canada Spokesperson Wendy Rozeluk is quoted as saying,

“There are many factors that come into play to make sure the selling and purchasing processes run smoothly. It takes time to bring support to more countries, which is something we are working hard to do”.

The latter is quite true as mistakes could cost Android big, being it is technically the new guy on campus. Also, the Montreal Gazette goes on to say, “She said Google is working on the problem and hopes to make an announcement next week.”

This would have many good outcomes including developer profits and willingness to develop for Android. In the end we have to remember that the market is a business and business thrives with more customers! I’m excited are you?
