HTC Offering SLCD in Addition to AMOLED Displays for Handsets [UPDATE]

HTC has announced it will be abandoning the AMOLED screens currently used in the Nexus One and HTC Desire.  As a replacement, HTC will introduce SLCD screens to its manufacturing  process later this summer.  See the full press release below.

UPDATE: HTC wrote in to clarify their statement.  We’ve since adusted the title of the post.  Thank you, HTC!

HTC isn’t necessarily  ‘dumping’ AMOLED screens, but rather introducing SLCD into the mix. Both screen types will be used going forward.  Having more than one option available should help to ensure demands are met for these awesome devices!

HTC Introduces SLCD Display Technology To Its Portfolio

New Displays to be integrated into HTC Desire and Nexus One

Taoyuan, TAIWAN – July 26, 2010 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced Super LCD display (SLCD) technology into a variety of HTC phones including the HTC Desire and global Nexus One later this summer. The SLCD display offers an exceptional natural balanced colour, clear contrast, broad viewing angles and improved power efficiency.

“HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC’s current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance.”

SLCD is the latest generation of LCD technology that offers improved performance from earlier LCD panels including approximately five times better power management. SLCDs also offer an enhanced viewing experience with wider viewing angles that are enabled by Sony’s new VSPEC III™ technology.

LG says they can’t make enough iPad screens, Apple may need to delay launches

Once again it looks like Apple might get some heat for something that it doesn’t control — namely the supply of iPad screens which LG now warns are constrained to the point international roll-outs might need to be delayed.

Given how much Apple does on their own, we sometimes forget they’re still at the mercy of other companies — even competing companies — when it comes to components, like LG for screens, and Samsung for chips.

Apple delayed their second wave of iPad launches by a month last May, and has just entered several more countries this weekend, but high demand and low screen supply seems to be something they can’t get passed. Even if they kick things into high gear, LG CEO Kwon Young-Soo warns, they won’t be able to meet demand until 2011.

Rumored 4th Gen Apple iPhone Parts Show Little Design Change

Above is a image that is claimed to belong to the upcoming 4th generation iPhone, courtesy of iPhone repair Web site iResQ. As iResQ points out, there are a few interesting things that stand out in the photo.

  • “The LCD appears to be factory glued to the digitizer which is more similar to the first generation iPhones than the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The digitizer can be separated from the LCD on the 3G and 3GS models, which should be interesting to all, but for the repair folks like us–this means that the 4G screen repair price will be higher since both parts will have to be replaced at once.”
  • “The iPhone 4G front panel seems to be about 1/4″ longer than its predecessors.”
  • “There is an interesting reflective, mirror-like surface directly above the speaker. This is likely a spot for the proximity sensor. If that’s what is is, it’s in a different location than previous models.”

Here at TiPb we are hoping for something more drastic in terms of design changes but based on these latest images it’s hard to tell if the “A+” upgrade Steve Jobs promised will hold true. These images may turn out to be bogus or simply be scrapped before the final product is put together. We’ve seen it happen before with the matte backing.

We are willing to give Jobs the benefit of the doubt on his A+ upgrade for the time being, how about you?

One more image after the break!

SlideScreen – Home Screen Replacement

Many handset manufacturers will take Android and give it a face-lift before dropping it onto a phone. Take a look at MotoBlur or Sense UI for some of the better examples.  Now this job is being taken into the hands of developers.

While there have been many home screen replacements, I think I’ve found one that not only does it well, but brings a fresh approach.  On top of that, it shows me all of the information I would usually spend about 10 min looking for. Larva Labs Ltd. have intuitively made a home screen that displays all the usual information the average Android user actually cares about in a concise and sexy way. Using gestures such as sliding and swiping you can interact with this home screen to peruse different services as pictured above.

The available services currently from top to bottom are:

  • Missed Calls
  • Messages
  • Emails
  • Calender Events
  • Weather
  • Google Reader
  • Stocks
  • Twitter

The setup is a breeze as the only information it requires of you is a Twitter login and the city for which you would like your weather (both optional). It is suggested you read the tutorial that comes with opening the app for the first time to get acquainted with how it works because it is quite a change from what you are used to. SlidesScreen can be used as a single app or you can have it replace your home screen entirely so that every time the home key is clicked it will bring you back to it. My first thoughts on it are:

  • It works much smoother than the original home screen.
  • It brings all of my favourite home screen widgets together.
  • I need only unlock my phone for a second to get updated with what’s going on in all facets of my life.

I have not found anything negative to say about SlideScreen but I will leave all criticism to when we give it a full review. The app is available now in the market as an ad-supported, free version.  The pro version carries a price tag of $6.99.
