Conan Puts The Tonight Show for Sale on Craigslist

src=”http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/conan.jpg” align=”right” style=”margin: 10px;”>At least there’s some more humor coming out of the href=”http://mashable.com/2010/01/11/nbc-conan-leno-kimmel/”>NBC late night debacle. On this evening’s Tonight Show, Conan O’Brien joked that he’s putting the program for sale on Craigslist — while he still can.

However, it appears that the listing itself is no joke, and can be found under the for sale/wanted > collectibles category in Los Angeles. Titled “4 SALE: BARELY-USED LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW,” Conan’s looking for your best offer, but also “willing to trade for Coldplay tickets.” /> id=”more-184743″> /> Here’s the href=”http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/clt/1551463643.html” >full listing, which includes some additional parting shots at NBC’s expense:

Pants on the Ground: American Idol Season 9’s First Viral Moment [VIDEO]

The latest William Hung heir apparent is href=”http://www.americanidol.com/videos/season_9/memorable_auditions/larry_platt/” >62-year-old Larry Platt, who auditioned in my hometown, Atlanta, Georgia. /> id=”more-184009″> /> Platt, clearly too old for the show (but entertaining nonetheless) auditioned with his own song, “Pants on the Ground.” Check out the Fox-provided video below:

The video is quickly becoming viral, with href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nsv2LrdXf1Y” >this YouTube copy garnering more than 151,000 views in just over 12 hours. As for Larry, href=”http://www.buzzfeed.com/ritaseven/general-larry-platt-pants-on-the-groundrdq-b40″ >BuzzFeed might be impressed, but he’s just one in a million singing guys straight out of Five Points to me. Catchy or not, “Pants on the Ground” is no href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQTuYo6HmiQ” >“MARTA Bus.”

What do you think? Are you watching Idol this year? Let us know!

Conan Wins the Hearts and Minds of the Internet

href=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/12/conan-obrien-statement/&service=bit.ly”> width=”51″ height=”61″ src=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/12/conan-obrien-statement/” align=”right”/>

src=”http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/conan.jpg” align=”right” style=”margin: 10px;”>The ongoing saga revolving around href=”http://mashable.com/2010/01/11/nbc-conan-leno-kimmel/”>NBC’s late night lineup took a sharp turn toward its climax this afternoon, with Conan O’Brien href=”http://mediadecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/01/12/conan-obrien-says-he-wont-do-tonight-show-following-leno/” >issuing a statement to tell “people of earth” that he will resign as host of The Tonight Show if it’s moved to a later time slot.

The response has been overwhelming, with the news topping Twitter’s trending topics, and users quickly voicing their support with “Team Conan” and #teamconan tweets. Here’s a look at the huge spike in Conan tweets this afternoon:

src=”http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/conantweets.jpg”>

Beyond Conan apparently having plenty of fan support (and Jay Leno’s fans perhaps not yet on the href=”http://mashable.com/social-media/twitter/”>Twitter bandwagon), the transparency and sincerity of Conan’s statement certainly isn’t hurting the cause.

The comedian apparently href=”http://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/7682413211″ >spent all night writing it, and manages to be both grateful, truthful and deeply loyal to The Tonight Show institution, all while making NBC look like one of the more evil entities to grace the face of the earth. My favorite part: “My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction.”

Good luck with NBC trying to shuffle its lineup, with or without Conan, with words like that coming from someone who has been one of the network’s most visible personalities for 15 years.

Here’s a look at the sentiment of tweets about the situation, courtesy of Crimson Hexagon:

src=”http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/conan-analysis.png”>

The Twitterverse is clearly on Conan’s side.

“Glee” Returns For a Second Season With an Online Twist

href=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/12/glee-renewal/&service=bit.ly”> width=”51″ height=”61″ src=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/12/glee-renewal/” align=”right”/>

href=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/glee-top.png”> src=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/glee-top.png” alt=”" title=”glee-top” width=”260″ height=”190″ class=”alignright size-full wp-image-182251″ />If you’re a fan of the TV show Glee, you can start jumping (or singing) for joy: Fox href=”http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/showtracker/2010/01/no-surprise-fox-gives-glee-an-early-renewal.html” title=”No surprise, Fox gives ‘Glee’ an early renewal | Show Tracker | Los Angeles Times” >has officially renewed the series for a second season. Not only that, but Glee will be going on a nationwide casting search next month that will include an Internet twist. /> id=”more-182249″> /> The producers of Glee are seeking to fill three new roles for the second season of the show and they will be accepting href=”http://www.fox.com/glee/audition/” >online submissions from amateurs and professionals between the ages of 16 and 26. More details will be announced soon.

Online casting calls aren’t exactly new, but the fact that such a big show — Glee was href=”http://mashable.com/2009/12/15/golden-globe-nominations-2009/” title=”Golden Globe Nominations 2010 Include "Avatar," "Julie & Julia" and "Glee"”>nominated for four Golden Globe Awards last month — is willing to at least entertain the idea of finding someone without using the standard agency process is kind of cool. Granted, our cynical side fully expects the roles to be cast with professionals, regardless of how the audition tapes find their way to producers, but it’s still a nice touch.

Glee has had a strong Internet following since its pilot debuted last May (and was subsequently available for free from iTunes). In August, Fox even tried to add href=”http://mashable.com/2009/08/31/twitter-fringe-glee/” title=”COOL: Reruns of Fringe and Glee With Twitter Commentary”>Twitter commentary to reruns of Glee and the sci-fi show Fringe, although that turned out to be a better idea in theory than in practice.

Are you a fan of Glee? What do you think about using the Internet to find new talent for network TV series? Let us know!

The Internet Is Laughing at NBC, Not With It [VIDEO]

href=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/share?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/11/nbc-conan-leno-kimmel/&service=bit.ly”> width=”51″ height=”61″ src=”http://api.tweetmeme.com/imagebutton.gif?url=http://mashable.com/2010/01/11/nbc-conan-leno-kimmel/” align=”right”/>

href=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/lenopic1.jpg”> src=”http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/lenopic1.jpg” alt=”" title=”lenopic” width=”169″ height=”160″ class=”alignright size-full wp-image-181425″ /> Now that an NBC exec has confirmed the rumors of a late-night lineup href=”http://mashable.com/2010/01/08/leno-conan-nbc/”>shake up, videos making fun of the situation have gone viral. /> id=”more-181379″>

Lesson learned: Denizens of the Internet won’t hesitate to rally around the child yelling that the Emperor’s not wearing any clothes.

NBC Universal television Chairman Jeff Gaspin said yesterday that the network href=”http://www.tvsquad.com/2010/01/10/its-official-jay-leno-is-being-pulled-from-10-pm-slot-tca-re/” >will definitely move Leno out of primetime. The suggestion that Leno’s show will drop to a half hour in length with Conan and Fallon staying at one hour was also confirmed.

Gaspin was vague about Carson Daly’s fate, promising only that he “will be part of NBC regardless of what happens.” It sounds like Leno has definitely agreed to the new deal, but that Conan is still mulling over his options, which include a not-so-subtle href=”http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/entertainmentnewsbuzz/2010/01/fox-conan-obrien.html” >hint from Fox that they’d love to have him. To fill up all that primetime space, NBC has href=”http://www.thrfeed.com/2010/01/nbc-greenlights-six-drama-pilots.html” >greenlit six new series in addition to J.J. Abrams’s Undercovers.

/>

The Web’s Reaction

/>

The whole fiasco has turned into a snarky Internet drama, with videos of comedians’ comments on the subject going viral over the weekend. The joke is on NBC, and the consensus among commenters on blogs, Digg, and everywhere else seems to be that the decision to move Leno into primetime was deserving of digital mockery to begin with. The Hollywood Reporter had to href=”http://www.thrfeed.com/2010/01/some-fans-unhappy-with-nbc-plans.html” >dig pretty deep to write about a dissenting view. The late-night jokes about the move are the centerpieces of this PR disaster. Keep reading for the cream of the crop.

/>

The Jay Leno Show

/>

Jay made references to the situation two nights in a row. Here are both videos.

style=”text-align:center”> type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” data=”http://widgets.nbc.com/o/4727a250e66f9723/4b4b577fa49b6dc7/4741e3c5156499a7/987868f9/-cpid/d820cab1f79df703″ id=”W4727a250e66f97234b4b577fa49b6dc7″ width=”560″ height=”412″> name=”wmode” value=”opaque”> name=”allowNetworking” value=”all” /> name=”allowScriptAccess” value=”always” /> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true” />

style=”text-align:center”> type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” data=”http://widgets.nbc.com/o/4727a250e66f9723/4b4b557640bf7fe2/4b47fde7a7e8447f/c4440576/-cpid/a2f5e07af677bdbc” id=”W4727a250e66f97234b4b557640bf7fe2″ width=”560″ height=”412″> name=”wmode” value=”opaque”> name=”allowNetworking” value=”all” /> name=”allowScriptAccess” value=”always” /> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true” />

/>

The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien

/>

Conan spent less time on the subject. After setting the tone to “absurd” by joking that he and Jay will run simultaneously in splitscreen, he tagged on a sharp jab at the end.

style=”text-align:center”> type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” data=”http://widgets.nbc.com/o/4727a250e66f9723/4b4b53f3572fd397/4b48149a16524046/81f5beb5/-cpid/bd50b8eabe53dd45″ id=”W4727a250e66f97234b4b53f3572fd397″ width=”560″ height=”412″> name=”wmode” value=”opaque”> name=”allowNetworking” value=”all” /> name=”allowScriptAccess” value=”always” /> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true” />

/>

Jimmy Kimmel Live!

/>

Kimmel’s monologue on the subject didn’t have much to do with the topic at all, actually, but it was still very funny.

style=”text-align:center”> width=”560″ height=”340″> name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/LS3uS_nMjkE&hl=en_US&fs=1&”> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”> name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”> wmode=”opaque” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/LS3uS_nMjkE&hl=en_US&fs=1&” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”560″ height=”340″>

He made up for it in this second clip, though, bringing in a cameo by the situation’s tragic odd man out: Carson Daly.

style=”text-align:center”> width=”560″ height=”340″> name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/uYzapxtLQbM&hl=en_US&fs=1&”> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”> name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”> wmode=”opaque” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/uYzapxtLQbM&hl=en_US&fs=1&” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”560″ height=”340″>

/>

Patton Oswalt on Comedy Death Ray Radio

/>

Comedian Patton Oswalt has more street cred than the late-night hosts these days, and he was very candid in this more serious (but still chuckle-worthy) interview on Comedy Death Ray Radio.

style=”text-align:center”> width=”560″ height=”453″> name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/ib5lVD8GBr8&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1″> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”> name=”allowScriptAccess” value=”always”> wmode=”opaque” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/ib5lVD8GBr8&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowfullscreen=”true” allowScriptAccess=”always” width=”560″ height=”453″>

/>

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson

/>

Finally, our favorite bit about the fiasco.

style=”text-align:center”> width=”560″ height=”340″> name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/v3cjCaGYrCc&hl=en_US&fs=1&”> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”> name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”> wmode=”opaque” src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/v3cjCaGYrCc&hl=en_US&fs=1&” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”560″ height=”340″>

“The Simpsons” Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Social Media Tie-Ins

Ever.” campaign, which has included a slew of social media tie-ins and special events. /> id=”more-181371″>

Last night, in addition to showing the newest episode of the longest-running primetime television series of all time, Fox aired a documentary by Morgan Spurlock (Supersize Me), which took a look at Simpsons fans from all over the world and featured interviews with creator Matt Groening, a slew of writers and the voices behind America’s favorite family.

U.S. users can watch it here, courtesy of Hulu.

/> width=”512″ height=”296″> name=”movie” value=”http://www.hulu.com/embed/cyibH1_kb6BdYMyT9ApwWg”> name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”> wmode=”opaque” src=”http://www.hulu.com/embed/cyibH1_kb6BdYMyT9ApwWg” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowFullScreen=”true” width=”512″ height=”296″>

Fox has been running an elongated campaign to celebrate the series milestone, both online and off. For example, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the very first half-hour Simpsons episode, href=”http://snpp.org/episodes/7G08.html” >“Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire” (titled “The Simpsons Christmas Special” in its original airing), Fox released a 20th Anniversary Collection on iTunes back in December.

Yesterday, a few hours before the 20th Anniversary special, Fox took to the social media realm by releasing an Adobe Air app called href=”http://apps.facebook.com/simpsonsunleashed/” >The Simpsons Unleashed, which you can get from href=”http://mashable.com/category/facebook”>Facebook. The app, which utilizes Facebook Connect, includes the option of letting Homer sit on your desktop and features episode news and previews. The app also lets you play pranks on your Facebook friends. It’s the sort of novelty tool that is kind of fun to play around with once or twice, but doesn’t really offer much aside from that.

Still, long-time Simpsons fanatics won’t be disappointed by the kitschy quality of the app (am I right href=”http://www.nohomers.net/index.shtml” >NHC gang?); it’s just part of the Simpsonian experience.

And speaking of Simpsonian experience, the staff at href=”http://mashable.com/tag/hulu”>Hulu selected 20 of their favorite Simpsons clips of all time and put them together in href=”http://www.hulu.com/collections/358/19210″ >this collection. It’s a pretty great trip down memory lane, especially if you’ve been watching these yellow-skinned bug-eyed characters since you were pupil in Miss Dickinson’s first grade class.

Happy Anniversary Simpsons!

TV Guide Adds a 3D Twist to Golden Globe Coverage

Honoring both film and television, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s yearly gala might not be quite as formal as the Oscars, but it’s every bit as glamorous. /> id=”more-181311″> /> The href=”http://www.tvguide.com/Channel/” >TV Guide Network will be bringing red carpet coverage to fans both on TV and online, and this year, they’re adding a 3D twist.

TV Guide’s red carpet show will debut something they are calling the “Hologram Glam Cam,” which, if it works, sounds pretty cool. The idea is that it will generate virtual 3D images of the stars in previous red carpet looks, so fans can compare and contrast fashion hits and misses. The Glam Cam’s use of 3D isn’t quite as advanced as, say, Avatar’s, but the use of this technology during such a huge awards show adds further weight to the idea that 3D is on its way to becoming more and more mainstream ( href=”http://mashable.com/2010/01/05/3dtv-discovery/”>Discovery and ESPN are already on the bandwagon). It’s becoming clear that 3D will be less of a novelty concept in 2010, extending beyond the techie-oriented realm of href=”http://www.wepc.com/discussions/view/9850/Why_3D_Became_the_Big_Trend_at_CES” >CES into your living room.

The TV Guide Red Carpet telecast starts at 6:00 p.m. EST/ 3:00 p.m. PST the day of the Golden Globe Awards, but at 5:30 p.m./2:30 p.m., href=”http://www.tvguide.com/” >TVGuide.com will start streaming Fashion Cam coverage.

The Golden Globe Awards are one of my favorite award shows (and I’m an award show nut), in part because you can almost always count on someone to wear something absolutely insane. I can’t wait to see who wears what this year.
