Video: 2.1 on HTC Droid Eris

Many Verizon customers read – with giddy excitement – yesterday’s news that Android 2.1 dumps for both the Droid and Eris have been leaked to xda-developers. We saw video evidence of the bump at work on the Droid a few days ago, but this is the first (that I’ve seen anyway) of the upgrade on Eris. Q2 is still the projected dats for a public release, folks, but at least we know it’s out there. Check the video after the break:

All US Androids to reach 2.1?

2.1-sBy far, the number one question I get about Android devices is, “when will my xxx get the x.x update?” And while I still don’t have information more specific than quarter on the most anticipated updates that I do know about, I can allay your 2.1 envy, if you have it, that is. Taylor Wimberly of Android and Me is reporting that all US Androids will receive the update – some OTA, and others via a PC tether – and most of them will happen within the next four months. Wimberly also hears that the G1 and myTouch will be the initial first gen phones to see the bump.

Moment gets updated, still not 2.1

Samsumg MomentIt’s been just over a month since Sprint and Samsung issued a standard maintenance fix for the Samsung Moment, but apparently the companies figured there were still some people out there who hadn’t gone into a store and finished the deed. Thankfully, they’ve gone ahead and made it a bit easier for those who were waiting for another option. No, this isn’t technically a “new” update, and probably the majority of folks out there already have it. But options are never a bad thing. Hopefully people didn’t assume this was the 2.1 update, though. That’s still at least a few days off, so hold your horses. The maintenance fix is meant to improve battery life, GPS (to locate you better indoors), as well as change the emergency dial on the lock screen, among a few other tidbits. Again, nothing major or groundbreaking. For complete instructions on how to update, go here.

Motorola clarifies 2.1 update plans

DroidNow, Motorola might have slipped up when they told DROID users that their coveted update to Android 2.1 would start rolling out to devices this week, but we’re not trying to point any fingers here. Even if, after the announcement, details started pouring out regarding what DROID users would (and wouldn’t) be getting with the update, we’ll go ahead and give them the benefit of the doubt. It helps their case that they’ve done the right thing, and released a little chart regarding the roll-out details of 2.1.

Probably the best news, is that the DROID’s update is coming some time soon. Sure, Motorola doesn’t go out of their way to inform users as to when soon is, but at least it doesn’t say Q2 2010, like it does for those lucky enough to own a CLIQ. The chart goes on to say that updates are also coming for the Milestone and Dext, but that shouldn’t be too surprising. Though, if you’re in the Latin America or Asia-Pacific region, you’ve definitely got some time to wait for that glorious update. If you haven’t started holding your breath in anticipation yet, you probably shouldn’t any time soon, either.

Rumor: February 22nd Marks 2.1 upgrade for Samsung Moment

Samsumg MomentEverybody loves a good rumor, and one as juicy as this should definitely start whetting the appetite. Especially if you’re one of those out there who went into a Sprint store and turned down the Hero in favor of Samsung’s physical keyboard-toting Moment. While we’d love to say that there’s more to this story than just the simple rumor mill round-up, we can’t. As it currently stands, neither Samsung or Sprint are officially commenting on the rumor. And while it was previously believed it’d be 2.0 gracing the Moment, it seems they’re skipping ahead (much like the Hero). A bit of bad news though: you’ll have to go into a Sprint store to get the update, so no over-the-air (OTA) goodness for you. Stay tuned, as we’ll update accordingly when we get any more information.

Droid: Update on the update (or lack thereof)

new

The back-and-forth shenanigans regarding the 2.1 Motorola Droid update is probably almost as frustrating to bloggers as it is to the owners of said gadget. And while we may not know when or exactly what, something is in the air. The image above, capped by Droid Life, shows a grab of the Droid product page over at Motorola, including the link, “SOFTWARE UPDATE NEW.” It’s pointing to an old update, but if DL is correct, this link (emphasis on the word new) is new itself. A remnant of the company-wide stutter that started this whole debacalu? (Tip o’ the hat to Mr. Morgan.)

The image after the break, from Android Central, reveals that Verizon employees have been assured that the update is still expected to roll out soon.

Droid 2.1 update *is* coming…PSYCH!

What a tangled blogosphere we weave when first we practice to break leaks. it wasn’t even a leak, really, when Motorola announced via their Facebook fan page that 2.1 would be rolling out sometime this week. In fact, it seems like it was just one manifestation of a company-wide temporary case of Tourette.

There was a page posted in Moto’s FAQ that detailed what users would find in the update, and perhaps more importantly, what they wouldn’t. That page is gone now and I’m starting to wonder if the early withdrawal was a response to public complaints about the lack of 2.1’s new app drawer and live wallpaper. As of now, only the Nexus One has those features and it seems like there’s a pretty good chunk of folks (granted, the unhappy few often speak loudest) don’t think it’s fair for Google to reserve some Android features for their own phones. Is it really that big a deal? Anyway, with Mobile World Congress about to kick off, perhaps Moto just brought the hammer down on a couple of anxious folks with loose lips.
