Yelp’s Got New Features: Bookmark Sync + Draft Support
Mar 4th
Yelp for Android arrived in December and has since been updated with some of the great features iPhone users are accustomed to. For those who have never used the service Yelp is a great way to review, discuss, and check out what businesses are good… and maybe not so good in your area! Today Yelp is bringing you Bookmark Sync and Draft Support in version 1.4 of their app.
What does that mean exactly? I thought you’d never ask. This makes the application experience almost as good as the web interface experience.
Download Yelp
Bookmark Sync allows you to bookmark things you like and want to remember so you can go back there or maybe want to check out later when you’ve got more time. Bookmarks are synced between your online account and your device. Whereas before you were not able to publish a full review of businesses, users can now create drafts on their device, have it spell-checked, proofed, and published later when you reach a computer. The Yelp app is downloadable for free from the Android Market. Check it out and let us know how it helped you.

href=”http://www.whitehouse.gov/” >White House is hosting a forum with more than 50 of the country’s top CEOs — Chris Hughes (
href=”http://mashable.com/social-media/facebook”>Facebook), Steve Ballmer (Microsoft), Jeremy Stoppelman (Yelp) all made the VIP list — with the purpose of finding ways to modernize the government using technology.

/> The forum is set to begin this afternoon, just after 1 p.m. EST, and the dozens of expected participants not only include the names mentioned above, but also Craiglist founder Craig Newmark, Wendy Lea of GetSatisfaction, Shantanu Narayen of Adobe and Sal Iannuzzi of Monster. Individuals were selected based on their proven experience in using technology to improve cost management and customer service.
According to the href=”http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2010/01/13/modernizing-government” >White House blog, the forum is less a discussion about cool websites and more an exploration of how to revolutionize the way that the government uses technology. While the current administration has impressively embraced social media and web technologies, it’s clear that its mission is to accomplish much more.
To that purpose, OMB Director Peter Orszag writes:
“Twenty years ago, people who came to work in the federal government had better technology at work than at home. Today, that’s no longer the case. The American people deserve better service from their government, and better return for their tax dollars. This forum is part of our efforts to modernize government and bring us into the 21st century.”

Unconfirmed Rumor: Google to Buy Yelp for $500M
Dec 18th
TechCrunch is reporting this evening that a deal between Google and Yelp is “80% likely” to happen. Rumored to be in the ballpark of $500M or more, the acquisition could be a huge gain for Google Maps and Android. Meshing Yelp’s crowd-sourced business directory together with Google’s Favorite Places could create a powerful tool for those on the go. Yelp has over 5 years worth of user data and business information compiled which would certainly go a long way towards Google’s mobile experience.
It was announced back in September that Google is ready to start making both big and small purchases. Yelp is said to be expecting revenues of around $30 million this year and forecasting $50 million in 2010.

The Roads Most Traveled – Rummble Brings Us All Even Closer
Dec 10th
As the world got smaller with the dawn of Social Networking, our tools to share the wonders of said world are growing exponentially. Attempting to bridge the gap between utility and user interaction is Rummble for Android, the gps based local search/review app that incorporates the same ideal as the Rummble site with the potential contributors that make up the Android Army (i.e, us). With Yelp style search & review functions for local businesses mixed in with the Facebook-esque social mingling, this free program blends the best aspects of a multitude of services to bring a more personal feel to finding nearby hot spots.
Though only in it’s beginning stages -relying heavily on socialising to improve searches- this app has a pleasant, simple UI that tries to reinvent the way we experience life and the ways in which we can share our experiences with everyone else.

Yelp Comes to Google Android
Dec 7th
Thanks to phones like the Droid, more and more online services are taking an interest in developing mobile apps for Google’s Android platform. The latest company entering the Android pool is Yelp. Yelp already has mobile apps for the iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm Pre and WAP phones.
Yelp for Android determines your current location (either using built-in GPS or a Wi-Fi-based location) and then lets you search for nearby businesses, read reviews of establishments and access a moveable Google map that can help you easily redefine your search based on locale.
Yelp’s game plan for its mobile apps: Release an app that’s a useful, stable product first, and then add bells and whistles and other updates over time. Yelp says they plan to release more updates to the Android app before the new year, but wanted to make the app available so Yelp users could start taking advantage of the service now.
In addition to location-aware searches, Yelp for Android also lets users filter their search by “Price,” “Open Now,” “Special Offers” and “Hot on Yelp.”

Yelp for Android is available in the Android Market and works in all of Yelp’s markets (U.S., Canada, UK and Ireland). The app is free — just go to the Android Market on your handset and search for Yelp.
